Lonaconing Silk Mill, Lonaconing, MD.

At the last meet-up I mentioned a photographic day trip to the Lonaconing Silk Mill. Well, I got it scheduled. Lonaconing Md. is about a 2 1/2 hour drive from Pittsburgh (depending on where you live). The mill closed its doors in Sept. of 1957 do to a worker strike and everything is left just as it was since that day.
The person getting us access is a photographer named Dave Hammaker.. He sets up tours like this at several locations. I went on one several months ago and had a great time.
There is a fee involved, $135.00. $35.00 goes to Mr. Hammaker for arranging access and $100.00 goes to the owner to help in the preservation of the property. In order for this to happen we need a minimum of 10 people to attend. If you would like to go you will need to send a check for $35.00 to Mr. Hammaker at Dave Hammaker Photography, LLC. P.O. Box 313, East Freedom, Pa. 16637. If you would like to pay by credit or debit card, you can contact Mr. Hammaker at [masked] and he will give you info on how to pay through PayPal or by credit card. The $100.00 is to be paid in cash to the owner of the property the day of the shoot.
I would like to make this a whole weekend shoot. Personally, I am going down Friday morning and plan to do some shooting on the way and then get a room for Friday. Saturday, shoot in the morning and do the mill in the afternoon. Sunday, shoot in the morning and then head home. I'm sure there are some interesting things to find in the area. If anybody would like to do the same that would be great. I will add more details later.

Hi everyone. Sorry for the delay in posting my pics, I've just started using Lightroom and am learning on the fly. Am really enjoying seeing our posting the fruits of our labor.

Lightroom is worth the effort to learn, Den, in my opinion.

No need to apologize, Den. Thank you for posting -- I'm very much enjoying seeing everyone else's perspectives on the place as well. :)

A search for the address of the Hampton Inn came up with 11200 New Georges Creek Rd SW, Frostburg, MD 21532, for those using a navigation system.

It looks like Robert Korn has the right address for the Silk Mill, with the zip code 21539 if you need that. (It probably spans from at least the addresses 70 - 74 on E. Railroad St.) The correct map link appears to be http://maps.Google.com/?ll=39.5677336,-78.9773&t=k&z=20 and matches this picture: http://www.MeetUp.com/PA-NJ-Photo-Tour-Enthusiasts/photos/13865252/217907032/ - In both the map and the picture you can see the loading dock on the far south end, the stairs to the south west and the shed just north of that.

I am planning on driving down and back tomorrow. Give me a call at [masked] if anyone needs a ride or wants to carpool. If it's that dirty/muddy, in addition to boots, gloves and a flashlight I'm thinking of bringing a bottle of tap water - for either drinking or maybe washing if necessary.

Hey John, are you sure about the actual address of the Mill? The map above looks like the wrong place, my search came up with this for an address. 74 East Railroad Street, Lonaconing, MD http://goo.gl/maps/GaTTu

The Silk Mill shoot is this weekend and I'm sure there are a few questions. This should answer most of them.

We will meet Dave Hammaker at the Hampton Inn in Frostburg, MD
11200 New Georges Creek Rd. at 12:00. The owner of the building needs $100.00 in CASH when we get there. It is an old building so there are releases to be signed for liability reasons. There are NO BATHROOMS at the mill. Wear old clothing or something you don't mind getting dirty. Wear good solid shoes, ( hiking shoes, work boots, etc. ). NO FLIPFLOPS OR SANDLES. you will not be permitted in.
I think that covers just about everything. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me. I've been looking forward to this for a while and I hope we all get some good and interesting images

Wonderful links, Aaron. I took a peek at some of these today...I particularly enjoyed the kind of 'guided tour' of the mill A.D. Wheeler created to show his images off. John, are there any special rules of engagement for this place that we should keep in mind as we prepare for Saturday?

My suggestion is to wear boots, long pants, clothes you don't mind getting dirty, maybe take some gloves, and plan on using a tripod. It's going to be very dark in some spots, so a flashlight wouldn't be a bad idea.

I put mine in the mail today. From what John had said during the last meeting, it sounds like this WILL happen one way or another -- Dave Hammaker had confirmed a few people on his end as well. I took the time to look up some other photos of the place and now can't wait! :)

It's now less than four weeks until the tour. I was wondering if everyone can confirm they have sent the $35 deposit in to Dave Hammaker? Those of you who signed up, can I get an 'aye' from you? Remember, we need 10 or more for access.

Things have been a little up in the air, but I made out check last night and got it sent to D.H. today. Having some issues with the car that need to be corrected before a long trip, but I think I can get off work one day next week to take care of that. Right now it looks like I will need to go down and back the same day, in case someone needs a ride and wants to ride shotgun.

Unfortunately I will be unable to attend, but everyone can find great photos of the place here: http://www.spiritsoftheabandoned.com/index.html

Go to "galleries" at the top, pull down to "Industrial I" to find Lonaconing in the list. The entire website is filled with beautiful photos of abandoned buildings by Sue Tatterson ---so take some time to look at the many places featured in the galleries.
