Dumpling Party (饺子会) - Celebrate Chinese New Year

  • to
  • This location is shown only to members

  • Chinese dumpling, or Jiaozi, is a traditional dish eaten on Chinese New Year's Eve, especially in Northern China. The joy of having dumplings not only comes from the wonderful tastes but also starts with the process of making them. It's always a warm and cozy activity when family and friends gather around the table, chatting while making dumplings. If you want to share the joy, come join us for this dumpling party on Saturday, January 25th, 2014, five days before the Chinese New Year's Eve.

Each family/group please bring about 1-2 pounds of dumpling filling. Hopefully different families/groups bring different kinds of filling, so we will have a chance to taste different flavors. I believe our Chinese group members must have their favorite dumpling filling recipes. For members who are new to making dumplings, here's a very helpful website with many good ideas: http://chinesedumplingrecipes.com/chinese-dumplings-recipes, read this first if you are thinking of being creative: http://chinesedumplingrecipes.com/tips-for-making-chinese-dumpling-fillings.html.

I will bring enough flour, and pots for cooking. If you have a rolling pin for making dumpling wrappers, please bring it.

We rented the place for 5 hours (4 - 9) and it costs $115. I would be grateful if each family/group could donate a few dollars toward the rental fee.

    Update:

Since we will have at least 40 people coming, I was hoping some of you could bring one of the following items besides the dumpling filling:

    • Drinks (soda, bottle water, juice)
    • Snacks (chips or some Chinese snacks)
    • Paper plates
    • Paper cups

If you are going to bring any item above, please add a comment to this meetup so other people can choose another item. Also, the 5 hours we have for the room includes setup and cleanup. If possible please come on time and help out.

Looking forward to seeing you all!

    Update 2:

Tomorrow it's going to snow. According to the forecast, it's not going to be too bad in Pittsburgh and Murrysville, only 1 -3 inches of snow. Therefore, the meetup will take place as scheduled. However, some areas in Allegheny County might see more snow, so please check the road condition in your area and along the way before you come. If you decide not to attend the meetup we totally understand, but please update the RSVP so I know who is not coming.

Very sorry for picking a wrong day again. I have cancelled the meetup just to be safe as the roads are not so good. I plan to reschedule the meetup if possible.

The roads are good today, by the way, in case that makes anyone feel more comfortable about coming.

Thank you for the update Steve! That made me feel better. My street has been plowed.

Hi-What will we be cooking the dumplings on? Is there a stove? We could bring a hotplate if needed.

    January 24, 2014

    • Jing

I am not sure if there's a stove. There's a kitchen. Yang will check it out soon. Yang said there was at least one hotplate. I plan to bring a single burner induction cooktop, two pots and a mixer.

      January 24, 2014

    • Yang

Yes, please bring your hotplate. It'll be very helpful.

I checked the kitchen this afternoon. There is no stove or hot plate. There are only a convection oven and a microwave. Please bring the hotplate if you have one. The room is huge! Please feel free to bring more friends to this party!

I think we have most things covered. Just one thing, it would be great if someone could bring disposable chopsticks. I will bring forks and spoons, but it doesn't feel quite right to eat dumplings with a fork :)

I've got the key and will check the kitchen today or tomorrow morning. We will bring paper plates, napkins, Chinese snacks, electric kettle, bottled water, rotisserie chicken (organic), candies, more than five pounds of dumpling filling (organic ground beef and Chinese cabbage), and five bags of dumpling wrappers.

    January 24, 2014

  • Yang

I'll pick up the key today. Everyone may invite more friends to this celebration because the room is big enough for[masked] people!
