Finding and Hiring Data Scientists (Breakfast Event)

Many firms in Pittsburgh are looking to hire data scientists. Where can we find the right talent? How do we determine that it is the right fit? What about the recruiting pipeline, from crafting the job ad to on-boarding, needs to be rethought when hiring data scientists? What has worked, and failed, for you? And how can we convince folks to relocate here if they’re not already familiar with why Pittsburgh is so often selected as America’s Most Livable City?

The discussion will center around the following topics:

Susan Buchman, Chief Data Scientist at Management Science Associates, will discuss successes and challenges in trying to implement the recommendations in Daniel Tunkelang’s influential talk on hiring data scientists

Andy Fraley, CTO of The Resumator, will discuss success stories and best practices recommended by theresumator.com, a Pittsburgh-based software company that develops Web 2.0 recruiting software

Saman Haqqi, Program Director, Big Data Marketing for IBM, will discuss the ways that employers are using Kaggle – a forum for data prediction competitions – as a recruiting tool

It was a good conversation about hiring technical people that also require strong communication skills.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
