Tooling

I'd like to start out with a nice conversation about tooling.  We will go over dev tools for debugging, coding and anything else that makes the task of writing code easier.

I somehow forgot to link the slides from the meeting. My sincere apologies. http://idiotcoder.com/tooling/slides/

I'll make sure to have them up before the meeting next time.

I'd like some feedback on the meetup if possible. I'm never comfortable talking to large numbers of people and when I opened things for discussion the wall of quiet was palpable. I felt very glad when the discussion took form.

Also, thanks for the CMD+ info. I'm sure that will help in the future.

Speaking to a few people, I feel we were hoping for more of a practical walk-through using JS testing tools. I enjoyed seeing a short preview of what was out there in the testing world, but feel some more actual content would have been well-received. The open discussion portion came too early and was too long.

On the bright side, everything presented was compelling and everyone who spoke brought something edible to the table. I will definitely be back next month.

I disagree with Andy, but I guess that's the point, to get all of us with disparate opinions in the same room to learn something from each other. I like the discussion, but maybe for the sake of clarity next time whoever is presenting could let everyone know the rough format ahead of time. Whether it will be a conversation starter like this past one, or it will be like a legit tutorial or walkthrough of some technology.

@Richard A - Can you post a link to that cmd-line Z you were using last night?

I will post the slides and link them sometime this weekend. I'll edit them to include links to the tools I mention and I'll add some of the others we talked about (like TraceGL) onto an extra slide for posterity.

Last-minute wedding stuff. Look forward to the next one though. And that beer you mentioned.

As a follow-up that I did not think of last night, what is everyone using for profiling on the client tier (for both performance and memory leak detection)?

    Sadly, conflict of schedule.

If anybody is interested, I could be convinced to grab a beer down the street afterward.

A superb topic. I personally use Chrome Dev tools. Would love to learn more.
