September Meetup: Bag of Talks

125 Scaife Hall, with a curved white roof, is at an "elbow" in Frew Street, a couple hundred feet from the intersection of Frew with Schenley Drive.  Parking is usually available on Frew Street in the evenings.  Call Zach [masked]) if you're having any trouble.

We'll have a series of short (maximum of 10-minutes) talks, each followed by a brief discussion.  Here is the tentative line-up:

Ross McGowen -- Some applications of the ifelse() function

Sam Ventura -- Web-scraping

Nick Christian - Interfacing between R and SAS

Andrew Thomas -- Building Faster C(++) functions To Speed Up R Routines

Bill Benter -- Using R for a horse race modeling project

The September meeting is sponsored by the Student Advisory Committee in the CMU Statistics Department.

Hey folks, below you'll find some scraping code. I just ran this by Sam and he thought that you folks might find this to be useful/interesting. This is not elegant or parsimonious code, but it does the trick:

Enjoy and please let me know if you have any suggestions ---

I've learned some new things since the talk a few weeks ago. Some people have brought to my attention the XML package. In particular, the readHTMLTable() function is very useful for getting the tables from HTML files very quickly: readHTMLTable("http://www.nfl.com/teams/roster...;) Sometimes it can't read the HTML code properly, so you have to use it in conjunction with the htmlParse() function. See the XML help file for more details. This should make some scraping tasks much easier with R!

FYI, my slides and code are posted on my website: http://www.stat.cmu.edu/~sventu...

Thanks to everyone for the great feedback!

Really really bummed that I only discovered this group today. About 2 years ago I attended the very first R users group meetup. I only got to meet myself! By the looks of things the group has grown. I cannot wait to attend the next meetup.
