Veggie Gardening 101 - Free Lecture

Join us at Schwartz Market on Saturday March 8 for a Veggie Gardening 101 class taught by experienced gardener and teacher, Carol Brand.  She'll cover the basics of soils, veggies, to answer those basic and not-so-basic questions you might have while starting a food garden.

Schwartz Living Market is an evolving collaborative space, using permaculture design in remodeling an existing building. We'll get a brief intro on what they're doing there at the class. You can check out their blog here http://1317eastcarson.blogspot.com/

The same class will be held at the McKeesport Library on the 20th and Fox Chapel Library on the 26th as well.

I found this about Mel's Mix.... You may be asking “whose mix”? Mel Bartholemew is the author of All New Square Foot Gardeningsquare foot gardening and the founder of the square foot gardening method. He recommends filling your garden boxes with a special mix, instead of dirt.

      Mel’s Mix

      1/3 vermiculite
      1/3 peat moss
1/3 compost (from as many sources as possible)

I learned how deep to plant my seeds and that No Till is a great idea so the cities under the soil do not get disturbed! Fantastic talk! Thanks Carol Brand, Jeff and Aryn, and all the folks who came out to learn about Veggie Gardening.
We are looking forward to when you can all be learning, planting and picking veggies from the Permaculture Production Farm on our rooftop at Schwartz Living Market! Go to http://1317eastcarson.blogspot.com for details about the project. Be sure to LIKE Schwartz Living Market on Facebook, and share our project with everyone you know!
