Intro to Play!, using Websockets and Slick

This is our first Play! meetup. Come to meet other Play, Scala, and Java engineers if you're already using Play or are just curious to what Play has to offer. We'll be meeting at LinkedIn and food/drinks will be provided. Please spread the word; we'd love to have a great first showing.

We will have a giveaway for ebooks from Artima and Manning.

Tentative schedule:
* 15 min for meet & greet, food, beer
* 1 hour for talks
* 15 min for Q&A

Talks (if you would like to present in the future, get in touch!):

* Introduction to Play: Been hearing about a magical framework that makes developing scalable web apps a dream? Well, it's not magic, but is quite dreamy. We'll give an introduction to Play!, showing what it can do and how to use it. This talk will be accessible for people not familiar with Play

* Exploring using Websockets with Play: We'll cover some basic examples, common pitfalls, and ways to build reliable platforms using Websockets in Play.

* Building Play apps using Slick: Thinking about switching from Anorm or another ORM and want to see what all the fuss is about? Come for an introduction to Slick, and to see some helpful patterns that will keep your code clean, testable, and reliable.

Just sent emails out to the winners. If I don't hear back in two days, I'll run the randomizer again and pick more. Tim, sorry about that — I added you to the list.

Through the powers of `Random.shuffle`, I've picked 5 winners for the giveaways. Congrats to: Alejandro Bologna, Shuo Ziang, Cory Dominguez, Chester Chen, and Neel Kumar. I have emailed the winners letting them pick which ones they'd prefer.

If I don't hear anything in two days, I'll run it again and pick other winners.

Congratulations guys, it was a very nice presentation!
The infrasctructure (place, chairs, screens) was awesome.
I don't have a Scala background and the Scala part of the presentation made me very curious to learn more.
I hope we have more of these Meetups.

Same here..turned back after having a nap in car on North 101 for 55 mins just to drive 4 miles...Wonder who was the intelligent person to keep meetup on such a day knowing the traffic would be nuts. Kindly think of others when u have the next session.

Apologies about that, we'll be careful in the future about other events that may interfere. We didn't know about the concert until the last minute — our fault. The stream was recorded at http://www.ustream.tv...

I tried to go, but gave up after spending an hour driving through the country music crowd. Will there be a youtube of the talk?

Sorry to hear about the traffic folks; bad timing on our part. The talk is streaming here if you want to follow from home: http://www.ustream.tv/linkedin-events

Heading down but I might arrive after it's over. If anyone goes out for drinks after the meetup, can you post the drink location here?

    There we go!

Traffic is crazy. Kenny Chesney event that is starting at 7pm. Can we delay the talk by 45 min?

    July 25, 2013

    • Noel Y.

If you're coming from 85N onto Shoreline, pass on the left the traffic but stay on the right-hand most Lane that'll eventually turn left. But instead of turning left, go straight. Then firm left onto Old Middlefield. Turn right onto Rengstorf, right onto Charleston, then left onto Shoreline.

Thanks I already went back home after waiting 20 min on 101.. Next time

One note: there is a concert that will be happening close to the LinkedIn office. It may lead to lots of traffic, so try to come a bit early. Also, if any of the traffic cops stop you, just tell them you're going to the Play meetup group at LinkedIn.

Anyone driving down from SF that I can get a ride with?

    July 25, 2013

    • Jim B.

Also a bunch of us are going down from Rackspace (600 Folsom St in SOMA) via Caltrain/taxi. I hear this faster than by driving.

I understand there is a concert in nearby amphitheater so expect traffic to be bad. Unfortunately I don't have a choice but heading out now

From Jim (the other co-organizer): The *should* be signs up and some security folks to point the way...

      It's at 2025 Stierlin Court: https://maps.google.co...

Walk in the door, head up the stairs, take a right.

We should have signs and some security folks to point the way. Just in case: walk in the door, up the stairs, and take a right.

What should we have as background?

    July 4, 2013

    • Yevgeniy B.

The first talk will be a basic intro to Play, so no specific experience is required, as long as you can follow Java/Scala code. The second talk will be a deeper dive into WebSockets and Slick, which will require some strong familiarity with Scala.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
