London Playtest meetup

The July Meetup will be on Sunday 21st July from 1pm to 8pm.

If you've designed a game, bring it along and give it a play or just enjoy playing other people's prototypes in a friendly and constructive atmosphere.

If you would like to bring along a new design, contact Rob Harris (Organiser) and your game will be added to the provisional list.

Deadline for pre-registering games is 11:59pm on Friday 19th July. Be sure to include the name of the game, the amount of players, the expected duration and a brief description. If you bring more than one design, add a preference for which one you would like to show first. Please feel free to still bring extra prototypes on the day. They will be added to later playtesting rounds.

(Please note that as a condition of our use of the Jugged Hare, only food and drink bought at the pub can be consumed on the premises.)

You can follow the group's blog at www.playtest.co.uk

We also have a guild page on BGG: www.boardgamegeek.com/guild/1398

Well done Rob for another great playtest day. Really enjoyed it! Thank you Mo, Tom and Matt for playing 'Alchemists' and for all the great feedback. I will be making at least two significant changes as a result of your suggestions. I also enjoyed playing and observing the games on show, including Dave's rock/paper/scissors game, Mo's Caterwaul, the Cro Magnon game and Matt's 'Wandering Monk' (is that the correct title?) game.

I'm closing in on a clean ruleset for Dexikon, and it might be helpful to have somebody test the game having learned it from the rules. If anybody is keen, here is the current rules doc and a gallery of all the cards:

I won't be able to make it until about 7 so I'm hoping there'll still be people there. I'll be bringing Orbiters. A 3-4 player microgame. Should take about 20 mins.

I'll bring Caterwaul, a 2-player family game about rival clans of cats trying to take over neighbouring gardens. It should take 30-45 minutes. It's in quite an early stage...

      July 1, 2013

I'll also bring along a new microgame, Hands Up!, a hand management game for 2-4 players taking 30 mins or so. Although this is also at a very early stage, so it'll be fine if only one of it or Caterwaul gets playtested.

Hi Rob, I would like to bring "Alchemists of Venice" for testing (again) on Sunday. Hopefully improved this time! Can you please add to list?

And again, I'm going to have to not attend. I'm really sorry. Money's not what it was and I can't really spare it for the trip. I will be back at some point though, hopefully with a friend in tow.

Can't make it this week — it's my sister's birthday: Boo! — but will be these in designer spirit since Matt will have co-designs Venice (newly spruced up and streamlined) and Trinity.

Hope everyone enjoys the day, and remember: Play nice. Test nasty. ;)

    1 · July 17, 2013

  • Matthew D.

    Hi Rob,

This time I will be bringing (in order of preference to be played):

    1. Intrepid Explorers (2-4 players, 60-90 minutes) - Euro style route building and deck building game.

    2. Venice (2-4 players, 45-75 minutes, co-design with Brett Gilbert) - Trading and building game in Venice on a modular board.

    3. Trinity (2-5 players, 90 minutes, co-design with Brett Gilbert) - Dice rolling, card drafting game set in the Roman Senate.

Thanks again for all of this Rob!

    • Rob H.

Hey Matt, games added to the list. Cheers, Rob

      July 16, 2013

  • David M.

I will bring Codex of the Gods a two or three player abstract that takes 20 mind. Hoping to have Adapt or Die Cro-Magnons Coming ready too. Aiming to be a 90 min survival board game for 3 to 5 but probably will ideally play 4.

    1 · June 22, 2013

    • David M.

Rob, I'd like to swap in 4Xpress instead of Codex of the God's if that's okay. It is also a 3 player game, takes 30 mins and is a microgame about conquering the galaxy.

      1 · July 16, 2013

    • Rob H.

      No problem, entry updated.

      July 16, 2013

  • Rob H.

Just a little reminder that in order to get your prototype on the playtesting schedule, you will need to give details of the game by this Friday. Either post here or send me a message. You are still free to bring designs that haven't been pre-registered and they will be playtested, but priority will be given to the games listed above.

Hi Rob, could I bring along my game called Privatise? It's a satirical political game involving auctions and role-selection, is for 3 - 5 players, and takes around an hour.

    1 · July 10, 2013

    • Rob H.

Hi Chris. Your game has been added to the list. (Very topical at the moment considering today's news.) Cheers, Rob

      Thanks Rob, see you then!

      July 12, 2013

  • Helen W.

Hi Rob - We have Blackjack Attack to play and its trivia variant Blackjack Quiz Attack. We can play it with 4-8 players but it's most fun with about 6. We can bring poker chips, but it's most fun if people bring some 2p coins to start making bets...

    1 · June 29, 2013

    • Rob H.

Hi Helen, Thanks for bringing a game along. It is now added to the list. Probably best to keep it to poker chips for now. The gambling laws in public places can be petty and archaic and may cause us problems with the venue. Roughly how long does the game take? Cheers, Rob

      July 1, 2013

  • Lawrence

For a light filler game I have just finished 2 player SQUASH! 10-15 min filler only. :) For squash fans really. Its tactical with cards and 2 little figures

Enjoyed my first event last week and will be along. Plan to bring a prototype for a wargame (Hegemony, 4 players, medium weight) that I've been working on.

    1 · June 20, 2013

    • Robert

Unfortunately I'm not going tomake it now (or at least I would be too late to be able to participate in a meaningful way) so strike me off the list. Hopefully I'll get Hegemony along for the next time.

    • Rob H.

Thanks, Matt. Added to the list. Cheers, Rob. (P.S. Is it the 2,3 or 4 player variant you want to playtest?)

    See you in August!

Hahaha, I'm not competing. I doubt I'll ever do so at an international level - most of these folk have been doing gymnastics and/or dancing since they were 8 (or earlier).
