London Playtest meetup

The March Meetup will be on Sunday 17th March from 1pm to 8pm.

If you've designed a game, bring it along and give it a play or just enjoy playing other people's prototypes in a friendly and constructive atmosphere.

If you would like to bring along a prototype to be playtested at the March meetup, please pre-register it by adding a comment below. Be sure to include the name of the game, the amount of players, the expected duration and a brief description.

The games added to the provisional list by 11.59pm on Friday 15th March will be used to form the schedule for the March meetup. It is still possible to register later or to bring other prototypes on the day to be playtested, but priority will be given in the schedule to pre-registered games. This is to help with the admin on the day.

This is the first time we are pre-registering games like this and any feedback on the process is welcomed.

You can follow the group's blog at www.playtest.co.uk

We also have a guild page on BGG: www.boardgamegeek.com/guild/1398

Better late than never; I've added a BGG geeklist about last Sunday's meetup. You can find it here: www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/155150/playtest-london-meetup-sunday-17th-march-2013

Please feel free to add comments and feedback.

Good idea! I'll head over there right away.

      March 25, 2013

  • Behrooz S.

Steeplechase was loads of fun. Possibly the best new game (to me) so far this year.

Subsistence - it was amazing what a drastic turn it took with Mo's suggestion. Good call!

Thanks to Georg/Gokce for the HCG feedback. I'll have a few more cards for next time.

(And thanks Rob for your opinions on Wee Van Sank.)

Good games, good location, good folk, banter, discussion... a highlight of the month.

Had a great time today. Was made to feel very welcome and genuinely enjoyed all the games I played. Thanks to Ben & Rob for some honest and useful feedback on Shield Wall (including some great enhancement ideas to try out). Be along again soon hopefully!

Good to meet you Dave, hope to see you again another time!

      March 18, 2013

    • Ben

No problem Dave! Best of luck with those two experimentally bred game designers!

Cheers for organizing Rob&co. Twas brillig. Really enjoyed Mo's "Shape Up" - seems ready to flog for £5 in airports and as an xmas stocking filler methinks. Be even more swell if it supported 4 players.

My footie game definitely needs shedloads of work. Thanks to Phil and Mo for soldiering through a rough playing.

Thanks, Richard! -- think the football game has loads of potential, I'd like to give it another go if you bring it back next time.

Can't remember who I mentioned this company too, but http://www.pixartprinting.co.uk does vinyl, canvas and various other printing techniques. Prices look very good, just a shame they don't do cards.

Great Meetup. Thanks for the great feedback from those who played Chocolate factory!

    1 · March 18, 2013

Great event, I had a lot of fun. I hope all the game designers had very useful feedbacks. I hope I will bring my concept next time.

    Great event.
I had loads of fun and lots of constructive feedback to keep me going until expo.
Fiefdoms is an interesting little area control game with plenty of potential. It builds up steadily to the 'will it, won't it' end game.

Hello! Thanks all for being such a welcoming bunch and for a great time play testing the games. For me it really added to the fun of playing to see what people brought to the table and seeing all the diverse ideas and discussing them afterwards. Also they all looked so professional! Cheers, Gwen

Great meetup, good feedback on my game - thanks! Enjoyed dodging the fog in Graveport and losing at Fiefdoms as well. :-)

    • Andy O.

Thanks for playing, was a really fun game, even if you did all abandon me! Enjoyable few games of Rock Scissors Paper Bang! I'm still not sure I'll ever work out a consistently winning strategy, but at least my pain is shorted lived lol

Something has come up, so I unfortunately can't make it! Once again getting to play the Chocolate Factory eludes me..

    March 17, 2013

  • Gwen M.

Hello! I've not been before and hope it's ok to come just for the playing, rather then game development!

    1 · March 16, 2013

    • Rob H.

Hi Gwen, Welcome to the group. Yes, you are very welcome to just play. Look forward to seeing you tomorrow.

      1 · March 16, 2013

If you would like to bring a game prototype to be playtested at the March meetup, please pre-register by adding it here in the comments section by 11.59pm on Friday 15th March. Be sure to include the name of the game, the amount of players, the expected duration and a brief description.

    • Rob H.

Also, please could you prepare a short introduction to your prototype, which could be read out at the start of the round.

      March 12, 2013

    • Rob H.

Apologies for the late update, I've been away from the internet. The schedule for tomorrow is coming together, but please feel free to still bring extra prototypes on the day.

      March 16, 2013

  • Matthew D.

Great idea Rob! The games I will be bringing:

The Empire Engine (2-4 players, 30 minutes): Microgame centred around using personal rondels to compete with and bluff your opponents.

Trinitas (2-5 players, 60-75 minutes, co-designed with Brett Gilbert): Eurogame where players roll customised dice to influence a variety of different people in the Roman Empire.

Pickpocket (2-5 players, 30-45 minutes): Card game where players take the role of a gang of thieves, and need to outguess their opponents to steal the most valuable goods by the end of the game.

I know all these probably can't fit in the schedule, but if there was any choice I would prefer to test Trinitas and Pickpocket. Thanks!

Rob, I'm really sorry, but I'm going to have to pull out from this Sunday's Playtest. So you can take my games off the list. Sorry for the late notice. I hope you all have a great afternoon, and see you next month!

      March 14, 2013

No worries, Matt. See you next month!

I'll be driving in as well tomorrow. I checked last month and Willow Place doesn't seem to have any parking restrictions on a Sunday :)

I'm coming in by train to Paddington so will get tube to Victoria. I assume it's close enough to walk from there?

    March 16, 2013

      March 16, 2013

      March 16, 2013

  • Behrooz S.

I'd like to bring the Hex Chit game again, with 100% fewer hexes and chits. ;-p

    HCG - Fantasy wargaming/spellcasting on a 1D(ish) board, 50 minutes, 2-4 players (Behrooz Shahriari)

I'll have a slightly better idea of timelength in 12 days, hopefully. :-)

    1 · February 23, 2013

    • Behrooz S.

Can I edit details slightly? 35 minutes. 2-3 players. I can make/bring 2 copies in case 4 want to play?

      March 15, 2013

  • Mo H.

Will bring new microgame Shape Up! – design challenge inspired by Brett's recent posts about such things.

    2 · February 23, 2013

    • Rob H.

      Good idea, Mo.

      March 12, 2013

    • Mo H.

I'll bring along Fishy Business as well (45 mins, 2-4 players, tile laying, fish collection) just in case we're short now Matt can't make it… it hasn't changed from last time, but I've rewritten the rules, so it might be interesting to see if people can work out how to play it without me explaining.

      1 · March 14, 2013

  • Lawrence

Alright. I'll only bring one game, the new simplified Chocolate factory game. i Playtested this one a couple of times <1hr. be nice to see what the experts think of this latest edition.
"You have just become the owner of a chocolate factory, when best to produce, when and how much to market, and can you beat the competition?"

    March 14, 2013

    • Lawrence

60mins 3-4 players (i'll happily stand back and observe)

I not bringing anything along, aside from childlike wonder!

    March 13, 2013

  • Robert M.

I'm afraid I likely won't be at this meet as I've got birthday stuff that weekend - but I hope you all have a great time. For an update, since the great feedback on The Dreamtorium Adventure last time out I've been struggling to wrap my head around how to implement it - but I am getting there slowly. Hopefully it'll be ready to bring back in the next few months - I'll definately try to come next time if it doesn't happen this time.

    1 · March 9, 2013

Looking forward to seeing how your game develops. I think it has great potential.

      March 12, 2013

for a change maybe i wont bring a game and playtest others :)

    March 11, 2013

  • Chris T.

I may be able to come a bit later but I have to go to Heathrow around midday. So will say No for the moment.

    March 11, 2013

  • Richard S.

Assuming I can sort out the card printing (suggestions welcome!) I'll have a football card game ready for a first playthrough. Tentatively titled "Footie" (but drole soccer puns welcomed as alternative names). 2 player, drafting and strategy card game with occasional dice. Play time should be 45 mins.

    2 · March 4, 2013

    • Richard S.

45 mins is approximate - it depends on how long it takes to draft players / tactics. I've not had a full playthrough yet, so will have a more accurate estimation hopefully before the 17th.

      March 5, 2013

    • Rob H.

My preferred quick card solution is to print onto A4-sized labels and then stick the image on card and cut out. It allows you to create a sturdy and good-looking card, but it can take a while with many cards.

      1 · March 5, 2013

  • Dave C.

    Like to add (working title):
    "Bejewelled meets Spongebob!".
2-4 players, 10 mins per player.
Tile placement, dice game, underwater theme.

    2 · March 4, 2013

  • Richard S.

I'll try my best to be there.

Cheers Rob. I would like to bring Shield Wall. 2 player dice war game. 30 mins. I do have a second rough copy of it so could run two simultaneously if that fits.

Don't worry, Bez, no disclaimer necessary, although good work on the epicness of your effort. I've liked all 3 of your comments too! ;)

    • Behrooz S.

Although not the one where I actually 'submit' my game. :-(
I guess the implied suggestion is that I should abandon game design for a while and try my hand at stand-up comedy? Well... I'm always up for trying new things!

    I'd like to register;
