January Meeting - Wed Jan 8th at the Plymouth Library

Please see the meeting guidelines posted on the discussion page. Work from five members will be reviewed at each meeting.  The members signed up for review at the December meeting are Scott, Nancy, H, Lee, and Agatha.  Work is to be posted 1 - 2 weeks prior to the meeting for review.  Hope to see you there!

Unfortunately we will be in the small upstairs conference room again at the Library, so I've limited the attendance to 12. As a courtesy to the other members, please only RSVP if you are reasonably certain that you will attend.  Thanks.

I enjoyed meeting everyone who attended tonight. I found the feedback to the submitted material very helpful personally as well as I go forward in my own writing. Everyone was very respectful in their critiques. I would have found it helpful for each person to do a quick introduction of themselves, explain if they published anything and successes that have had, the subject/audience they are writing to, as well as what their goal is for their written work. In particular because I believe there were several of us new tonight. Also having a brief social meet and greet time at the beginning would add camaraderie to share with one another at a greater comfort level during the discussion time.

While I've read a few books about writing fiction, I lack literary foundation. I was wondering if you all had some suggestions on good resources? I'd like to be able to recognize different styles, different literary devices that would help raise the level of my game. Thanks!

Scott, any chance of you reposting your comments about my draft? I can't open your zip drive.

Brian - You should be all set. I uploaded a Word version. Please let me know if you have any further issues. Thanks so much for the recommendations. I downloaded Gardner's book last night and read through his take about fiction as art. I found it refreshing, an excellent essay. I only wish I could have taken his course. I think both Gardner's book and Elements will, indeed, take several readings to fully grasp. I am so, so thankful I found this group.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend. My wife is an accountant at Ford Motor Company and January 8 happens to be the last day of quarter close. So I will need to be at home with the kids! I will finish reviewing everyone's posted work and look forward to seeing you all in February.

Thank you, all, very much for the feedback on Sunshine. It's a great help.

Thanks, Brian. I really, really wanted to come. This is an excellent, dynamic group. I think we have the potential to really help each other out as writers.

Because of work, I definitely won't be able to attend the meeting next week. I hope you all have a good time, and fingers crossed that I'll be able to make it to the next one.

    FYI, everyone:

Warren will no longer be commenting on our work. Nor will he be attending any of our meetings.

It's a good idea not to open any of his emails. I made this mistake, and it came at the cost of corrupting some of my email files and frying my mother board. Please don't make the same mistake.

    Happy New Year!

    Anthony,

It looks to me like you've reviewed everyone's work but Janice's. You probably overlooked it because it's on the second page. By the way, thank you for the thoughtful critique.

    How do you like Detroit?

Illness has prevented me from joining you this past year, but I am looking forward to finally getting physically involved. Hope to see you at the next meeting.
