Say Hello to Ms Regina Long-Southall... She is a retired educator and the author of three books; Poetry from the Heart, Teaching in Elementary Schools and Coffee Table Poetry. Ms Southall was our star pupil at Saturday's workshop - The Business of Becoming a Published Author.
She is an exceptionally talented writer, but the story of her limited success as a published author is unfortunately typical. Her first book Poetry from the Heart was released in 2006 through Xlibris with a first run of 300 books. She was not satisfied with the quality of the publishing by Xlibris but pressed on with a few book signings at Borders Books and other venues. Twelve years later she still has copies left.
Learning from her first mistakes she switched to Outskirts Press for the publication of her next two books. There is a very noticeable improvement in the quality of her two most recent books. Realizing that even a great book won't be successful without good marketing, Ms Shouthall signed up for our course to improve her literary marketing skills.
I can't share all the trade secrets we shared with Ms Southall, but for the first time she is looking at authorship as a business, not just a hobby. She also has a greater appreciation for what the arts and literary organizations in her community can do to support her aspirations. Its hard to imagine a downtown business achieving real success in a city without being a member of that city's Chamber of Commerce or some other business consortium. Likewise, as an aspiring writer or published author, how successful can you possibly be without connecting to the very organizations that support our art form?
Be on the look-out for Regina Long Southall, equipped with three great books and a new business marketing savvy! http://outskirtspress...
