Announcing a new Meetup for Political Animals - Central London!
What: RESCHEDULED: Political Animals next meetup
When: September 17,[masked]:30 AM
Where: (A location has not been chosen yet.)
Hi everyone - Sorry for the confusion about the next meetup, I've been away/asleep on my post. We are not
going to be meeting on 27 August as we haven't selected a book after the last meeting, and I want to give people a month or so to do the reading. Instead I suggest Thursday 17 September
- is anyone not able to make it? Venue to be decided.
For the reading: We discussed reading an anti-Enlightenment/liberal humanism figure to counterbalance JS Mill*, and came up with a contemporary writer, John Gray. He has written a critique of humanism (Straw Dogs) and a critique of global capitalism written in 1998 (!) which argues that democracy and the free market are competitors rather than partners, and capitalism is inherently unstable (False Dawn). Because we are Political Animals I'm leaning toward reading False Dawn, but the other book touches on moral philosophy so would also be appropriate.
Thanks to Michael, Dua, Iveta, Andre and Ruslan for turning up at the last meeting - looking forward to also seeing the rest of you next time :-)
*Not that liberal humanism and the Enlightenment are necessarily equivalent.
