Announcing a new Meetup for Political Animals - Central London!

What: September Meetup - Max Weber and the spirit of capitalism

When: Thursday, September 16, 2010 7:30 PM

Where: Savoy Tavern
2 Savoy Street WC2R 0BA

Hi all -

Thanks to everyone who showed up to talk about Judt - opinions on the book were pretty mixed, which made for a lively discussion. Next month we will be reading Max Weber's "The Protestant ethic and the spirit of capitalism" - a classic sociology text from 1905 arguing that capitalism grew out of Protestant asceticism. Not sure what he'd make of the Medicis.. or the Rothschilds.. but I'm not going to dismiss the book until I've read it.

I will be reading the translation from 2001 by Stephen Kalberg - it's around 250 pages. There is also an economy edition available on Book Depository:

The meetup will be upstairs at the Savoy Tavern, same as last time, where I have reserved a table - see you there.
