I'd like to suggest the autobiography of Assata Shakur ("Assata: An
Autobiography"), and also people can check out the Hands Off Assata
website at www.assatashakur.org.
On May[masked], Black Panther activist Assata Shakur (fsn) JoAnne
Chesimard, was pulled over by the New Jersey State Police, shot twice and
then charged with murder of a police officer. Assata spent six and a half
years in prison under brutal circumstances [including being incarcarated
with white-power racist gangs] before escaping out of the maximum security
wing of the Clinton Correctional Facility for Women in New Jersey in 1979
and moving to Cuba [where she was granted political assylum]. It should
be noted that the FBI targeted Assata and the Black Panther party
under the COINTELPRO program, and that at trial medical experts testified
that there was no possible way Assata could have fired a gun, and that her
hands were in the air when she was shot.
