Round 1! Introduction and React.JS

  • Jun 4, 2014 · 7:00 PM
  • Optoro Chinatown

Welcome! This month Josh will set the stage for Polyglot Programming and Corey will talk about React.JS:

Josh Szmajda - Welcome and Introduction to Polyglot Programming

What's this group all about? Josh will give an intro to who we are and the goals for the group (learning  and cross-pollination), then present a survey of current languages and a brief programming language taxonomy.

Corey MartinLean, mean front-end development with Facebook's React JS

Facebook calls its React JavaScript framework "a JavaScript library for building user interfaces," but that's an understatement. It's a new way to organize your app's front-end into components that interact sanely.  I recently dropped it into a production Rails app, and was shocked at how much it accelerated front-end development. No wonder Facebook, Instagram, and Khan Academy use it in their web interfaces. We'll look at how to use React in existing and new apps and examine how it's different from most JavaScript MV* frameworks.

----

We're just getting started so we're looking for people to speak. It's ok if you've never spoken before or if you've spoken hundreds of times, we want to hear from you!

We're looking for talks about anything interesting to programmers, come share about your favorite language or framework, or learn something new and talk about how it went! We're hoping for talks  about anything but here are a few things members have mentioned wanting to learn about recently: Go, C, C++, Haskell, Erlang, and Elixir.

Hey folks please try to arrive before 7:15, the guard at the entrance leaves around then so you might have a hard time getting in if you arrive later than that. If you do get stuck outside, let me know via replying here or mention me on twitter, @jszmajda.

Thanks, I'm looking forward to tonight!
