Pondering Money

Hello Ponderers!

This coming Tuesday we'll ponder about money.  Thanks to Tris for the suggestion!

This conversation could go in any number of directions.  So think about what kinds of questions you'd like to tackle. :)

See you then!

Marguerite and Lable you make a good case for a PTSpouse Throwaway disorder, It is probably a subcategory under PTMTD for the following reasons: the throwaway happens later in life where the possibility to recover from the event is higher, the items involved in the throwaway are often more personal than valuable (although not always the case).Researchers though are finally asking the question: where did spouses initially learn this impulsive/ compulsive behavior and yes, you guessed it, their MOTHERS! I encourage both of you to ask your spouses about this and report your findings to 1-DONOTTHROW. Now I find that I must stop writing about this as I am getting close to relapsing myself. I just checked out the price online of the 1957 Mickey Mantle baseball card (I had five of them). I want to tell you the price but cant, it is contraindicated for me to do so. I am off to my group. You are all always welcomed to attend. Thanks for all your sharing and support around this sensitive issue.

I had just put on a shirt that I had worn at a past ponder's. It had my name tag stuck to it. And immediately my heart affectionately took me in spirit, to being with this group.

    A loving experience, time transcending.

well .... thank u all for all yawl advice! books are like friends so my loss ran deep. and yes lable ... it is a spouse thing - not a gender bias. i think my years in group working towards a degree helped; but what helped the most was switching gears. i now ONLY read about the middle ages sooooo i am willing o let go of all my old friends.

After listening a bit to some of the stories last night I became aware of a new affliction that I think I have, called Post Traumatic Mother Throwaway Disorder (PTMTD). Suffers have experienced their mothers throwing away very personal and now valuable items ( i.e baseball cards) during the childhood, adolescence or early adult years. There are a variety of associated symptoms and triggers for this disorder that can last well into late adulthood. Contact me for more information about recovery and groups for PTMTD. You can heal from this and also learn how to prevent this condition from afflicting younger generations

I agree with Marguerite that it's not just mothers. I used to live in fear of having to take business trips because I knew that when I returned my wife would have helpfully disposed of all kinds of interesting things in my closet that "I didn't need". And, Bill, while the PTMTD/PTHTD/PTWTD recovery group sounds brilliant, I must decline membership. I would have been able to afford it if my mother had not thrown away my comic books, but as it is ...

Marguerite, Of the two options you are considering, I recommend the latter. If you do seek therapy, definitely make it group therapy, as the rates are cheaper.

Marguerite: There has been new research that has identified this behavior of Husbands as possibly being a related disorder, although it appears for now that Mother Throwaway has been around for a much longer period of time with more identified victims spanning across at least 3 decades. One of the particular triggers in this aliment seems to be related to what the actual monetary values of the disposed items are in present day dollars. Obsessive monitoring of these values (online auctions, collector magazines, hobby shops, etc) is also an indication that the disorder may be progressing at a rapid clip. However, this is not to diminish your symptoms in the least, since they appear very similar to those of PTMTD although sleep disturbance may indeed be a new behavioral symptom. That being said, I think recovery protocols would still be very similar to those of Mother Throwaway. Further research will be ongoing in this area as more situations like yours come to light. Hang in there….

Still plenty of grist for the mill. Perhaps we should have "Money - The Sequel" next week for those folks who were enthusiastic about the topic but could not attend, and to continue the insights. When Citizens United evokes the Holocaust and the pursuit of happiness evokes redistricting, there's more to ponder here.

This will be my first ponder (if I make it off the waiting list). Definitely an interesting topic, and one that makes me crazy. Since I just recently retired I am having to look at money in a whole new way. I love to ponder, do it all the time! I look forward to meeting some new people.
