The Persians, the Germans, and the Greeks all debated issues sober and while drinking their favorite intoxicating beverage. In Plato’s Symposium, great minds gathered around to drink and engage in intellectual discussion, becoming more animated and fanciful as the hours and the drinks add up.
We are trying to recreate this atmosphere with this book club.
In this bookclub, we read and have engaging discussions (sometimes quite passionate ones) about popular scientific and current event books. The books cover issues either in modern science some episode in the history of science, and about current events (usually those with more than a momentary importance). For the past two years, we’ve had great discussions, even with those who came but hadn’t read the book. Generally, the discussion has started with the book and then moved to broader issues raised by different perspectives on each book.
Each book will be roughly 200 pages, and so easily readable in a month. If you want to read it and talk about it over a few beers, that would be great. If you just want to show up because the topic seems interesting, come on ahead. Come and meet at On Tap in Lakeview, the second Wednesday of each month around 6:00. Come join us!
