Are you paying too much for your mortgage or rent? Sydney grows by some 65,000 new residents each year. This is the main reason why housing is so expensive.
The human population grows by over 220,000 per DAY. India holds the world record with a population growth of over 42,000 per day. Australiawide we add 1000 new people and about 400 new dwellings each and every single DAY. Clearly population growth is an environmental problem. Yet environmental groups rarely mention population. There is talk about climate change but not about the underlying reason for it.
At the same time we are basing our civilization on the supply of finite resources, in particular oil. We consume about 85 million barrels (159 litres / barrel) per DAY. Developing countries the world over are getting in on the consumer society dream and the rate of consumption of resources is increasing with the population. The most populous nations like India and China are adding huge straws to the already half empty glass of oil resources. Nobody seems to realise that the cheap fuel party will soon be over.
There is good evidence that the coming years and decades could see serious shortages and hence price explosions for resources and therefore everything else, including food. It is increasingly difficult and expensive to produce oil. Without it, our society as we know it will simply not function. Remember what happened to the price of bananas? Imagine the time when fuel will cost $5 or $10 per litre! And it is not just peak oil, it is pretty much peak everything. People think that we will run out of oil one distant day in the future and until then we can go about our merry ways. This is not the case. Prices will shoot up when demand outstrips supplies. This seems set to happen soon.
Society needs to urgently prepare for a sustainable lifestyle. If we don't, nature will simply pull the rug away from underneath us. If you think Australia is a big country with lots of space for more people think again.
This group is for upbeat people who want to meet concerned fellow thinkers. We want to talk about solutions as much as about the problem. We want to raise awareness as humanity seems to be blissfully ignorant of the elephant in the room. Perhaps we even spawn entrepreneurial projects to deal with the challenges ahead.
If this sounds like you, please join us now.
I look forward to meeting you soon!
Mike
