Rick Morgans will share some fascinating insights on running wind models (computer simulations of how the wind flows around buildings) on the Amazon cloud, discuss some the challenges found with massive computation in the cloud and present some results as a case study.
Rick works as a mechanical engineer with an increasing interest in data analysis, machine learning and the cloud. He has been interested in computers since his family got a MicroBee in the early 80's, and has made numerical modelling with big computers his career - working on projects as diverse as fire modelling, lens coating process modelling, rocket launch acoustics (running on clusters of 180 computers) with a diversion for a PhD in optimal loudspeaker design.
