I came across this really interesting documentary and I was wondering if other folks would be interested in watching it and hanging out. (Scroll to the end for logistics.)
Blackfish is a documentary about orcas in captivity. A few years ago, an orca killed a trainer seemingly out of the blue. Orcas (cetaceans) belong to the rare lot of creatures that pass the "mirror test"--they recognize themselves in mirror, indicating self awareness and a high level of intelligence.
As a guy who went to Sea World growing up, I find this topic super interesting!
Here's the trailer: http://blackfishmovie.com/
Here's a New York Times video on the movie: http://www.nytimes.com/video/2013/07/29/science/100000002362636/a-complicated-cetacean.html
If you've seen the Cove http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cove_(film), Blackfish sounds really similar. If you haven't, I highly recommend it--it won an Academy Award!
I'm going to tentatively set the date for 3PM on Saturday, August 10th, and wait to see if there's any interest at all. The available times are 1,3,5,7,9PM on Saturday, so we can change around. We should definitely watch the movie and hang out afterwards/talk about it, and we need to order our tickets beforehand since it opens the day before.
