My name is Alex and I just moved back from Montreal, where we used to do "Critical Mass" bike rides at the end of each month, where a whole bunch of bikers would all go out in the city together and bike together, taking up a whole lane and being able to socialize on black top without having to worry about cars or huddle on the margins
It only lasts a half to a whole hour or so (especially in a small city like portland) and we contact the city first and cause very little inconvenience to anyone, while we promote the healthy and fun lifestyle of urban biking
Then afterwards we'd often set up a projected movie in a park
I'd be happy to organize this if a good bunch of people (at least 20 or so, and maybe way more!) felt like doing it, it doesn't take much work and is a great feeling of freedom (closest thing possible to flying around with your friends like a bird I think)
So if any of you live/bike in the portland area and are interested please get in touch!
