Jam Session 101 and Practice Workshop

  • August 28, 2013 · 7:00 PM
  • Bodhi's Basement Bistro

This workshop introduces participants to the skills necessary to more fully participate in a jam session or impromptu music endeavor.

As a beginner's class, this is also a reasonable environment for experienced musicians to gain some practice-time with secondary, less-familiar instruments in a group setting.

Topics of discussion include the basics of song structure and orchestration, communicating song structure to new musicians, and leading a song in a music session.

Practical instruction in playing instruments, note-taking, lead breaks, and fronting a song will be presented.

The aim of this workshop is to give individuals the skills necessary to confidently and fully participate in open jams and other musical endeavors or events.

Please Note:  There is a fee of $5 per session for this 3-hour workshop.

Hi Bodhi - I just injured my whole hand pulling my portable piano off of the shelf, getting ready to attend the workshop tonight. I am currently icing it, but based on how it feels right now, figure I should just cancel with you so that someone else can take my place. I am very sorry to cancel so close to the meeting time...was very much looking forward to doing it tonight - had 12 copies of my song all ready and everything! I hope to attend next month... Thank you.

Do people usually bring some sort of written out sheet music/chords for the song they plan on playing? Looking forward to tomorrow night, just want to be prepared! Thanks!

Everybody gets a chance to suggest a song, but suggesting a song without a little something to share along the lines of chords/lyrics can be pretty problematic. We usually write the structure up on a whiteboard, for everybody to follow, but having your own lyrics sheet can be extremely helpful.

Pick fun, pattern-based songs that you can help guide us through the structure of, and we'll all enjoy learning a new song and playing it together!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
