meetup in guitar

This will be held at Chris' house again.

**** I HAVE MOVED THE TIME BACK TO 6:00 pm.  ******

If there are enough attendees, we will split into two groups as we did in August when 15 people showed up.

Beginners in one, and Intermediate and above in another. The beginners might ask an intermediate/advanced player to sit in with the beginners. We'll draw straws and rotate it among the better players if there are no volunteers. I think the beginners benefit from a more experienced player sitting in.

Self define beginner for yourself.

Acoustics and electrics are welcome, but we'll keep the volume down on the electrics as before.

Bring a couple songs to share if you like. If we need to make copies I can do that at the house.

We'll all be sitting inside for this one. Probably a maximum of 7 upstairs and 7-8 downstairs.

Bring a tripod chair or such if you have one.

This will go from 6-8:30pm. That seemed to be a good time for last time.

The address will be sent out 24 hours before the meetup to the attendees.

I live in Multnomah Village, Portland, OR, 97219

Some songs I am playing are below. (BTW, you can substitute a minor for a 6th lower.  Em7 , Bm, and switching to a Dm can be difficult. Substitute these 1. Em > G,  2. Bm -> D, and 3.Dm -> F. You still keep aligned with the sound, and it's easier to play so you can still play along. If nothing else, play C and hum loudly :)    Some of these are "sus" chords but we can cover these again. The sus chords in these songs are few and easy to learn/play. If nothing else just play the basic chord instead (G sus2 -> G).

The meet up was very rewarding. There were some accomplished players of many styles, sharing the music they love.

Experience = finger-picking blues & folk. I have become very interested in Bossa Nova, so jazz chords & theory are part of the package. Hoping to meet others who are similarly inclined.

I am having trouble navigating this sight. I would like to cancel for 10/13/12 and sign up for 10/21/12. Sunday is better for me than Saturday. Afternoon would be my first choice of time and evening my second. Thanks everyone

Hi Michelle, If you go to the top of the column at right, it will say RSVP -- you should be able to cancel from there. If not, most likely Chris will see your note and delete your Oct 13 RSVP.

ahh ... post Oct 21 now in your reply if you think that day might work.

I am repeating this message here because I know email messages can become lost and hard to find later .. sorry to spam you twice.

I am creating a new meetup for next weekend (Oct 20, 2012).I am going to hold off signups for it for a few days.At this point I will ask that you only attend one of the two meetups.
But here’s what you can do if that date works for you …If you can make that one … please cancel the Oct 13 meetup, and just ===>>> type Oct 20 in your RSVP comment.
I am doing this to relieve some of the congestion in this weekend’s meetup … as I think most of those signed up will actually attend … and it might be too many … even in two rooms.
On Saturday morning, I will check to see who has indicated Oct 20 will work, and add them to that meetup list.

Early next week I will open that meetup to signups, but limit the number of attendees.

In the meetup description I posted some more song links. If you want to post some youtube links on songs you are thinking of playing this weekend post them if you like. There's no need to post the song chords or lyrics. But if you want you can do that too. I think PDFs allow everyone to view it (I learned that last meetup).

I really should do that sometime. But for now, I won't be able to make this meetup. One person I was bringing won't be in Portland in time to make it. So sorry, I was really looking forward to this for weeks! Ciao ~ Deborah

I have closed this meetup to any new rsvps. Without any other organizers (other than Deborah) actually hosting, it only makes sense to close the group to any new members. I did not expect such an increase in the last few days. Prior to last month, when we had 14 people attend, the most we have ever had attend a meetup was about 8 at my house.
Does anyone else want to host a meetup in the future?

Perhaps we can meet at a park? We did that in Austin and it worked just fine though it would have to be a little earlier since the daylight is going. just an idea

    • Chris G.

That's a good idea Kelly. I will keep that in mind for future meetups. As we head into fall and winter we'd need to be prepared for a backup indoor place probably.

last week a movie starring Cate Blanchett on the Irish journalist Veronica Guerin, who was gunned down by the Irish drug lords she was exposing in the paper in the mid 1990's. What an incredibly brave and driven woman she was.
Sinead O’Connor sings some excellent songs on the sound track.

Here Sinead O’Connor sings a song that many of us as children sing in grade school. But she does it with magic (it is not in the movie or the soundtrack).
She takes a song that I thought of as … ho-hum, it’s too old to sing … into not just a good performance, but a great one. Enjoy!
Sweet Molly Malone … the 'anthem' of Dublin.
I'll post the chords/pdf on this site under the songs files today or tomorrow (See Menu:More, submenu:Files)

That's cool about the song. Haven't seen the film, but at one point saw the trailer for it. Chris, is it OK if I bring a couple of guests? They're family members that like to play, and we can bring 3 chairs. I was going to download on the site a song I've been working on but I would have to retype it; it's a mess and hard to read. See you all later, Deb

    • Chris G.

Sure Deborah ... bring them along. Please add a +# ... generally I am going to require others to always register, unless the sponsor of that person has attended before. I think I'll need to do that manually. If we get too many people for the two rooms, we can all draw straws on who sits out and stands to the side for a song or two. So many people no-show that I don't want to limit the number yet, but at some point I might need to.

Please bring a beverage if you like. There are some of us that enjoy a couple beers through the evening, and you are welcome to join us. I have a side cooler you can out them in.

I think the beginners will sit inside, upstairs. I have hardwood floors upstairs, so any tripod chairs should have rubber or plastic where it contacts the floor. For any sheet music stands ... I'll have protective tape on hand to put on the bottom legs if they have metal ends on the legs. The downstairs has carpet, so all I ask is that chairs and any music stands be clean of any dirt. Thanks. See you there.

for anyone who sat downstairs last meetup at my house ... was there enough light downstairs? I have the overhead lights on the table light at the end of the room ... but didn't know if I should get another light downstairs. I think probably a lot of the intermediate players don't need or even want bright lights so maybe I won't worry about it.
I think the fluorescent light at one end of the room gets too bright so I think it was kept off.
Please don't forget to bring tripod/armless chairs if you have them. I have some armless chairs and sofas ... but probably not enough.
