Please join us for a fun-filled weekend of camping, hiking, and socializing on beautiful Orcas Island over Labor Day weekend. Meetup Portland Hiking has gone to this spot for the past two summers and they have been some of the most memorable Meetup hiking events. This is a very popular trip and RSVPing early is recommended.

What: Annual Orcas Island Camping trip over Labor Day weekend.
When: Friday September 4th through Monday September 7th.
Where: Upper campground, Moran State Park, Orcas Island, WA.
Why: Fun, campfire, hiking, bicycling, kayaking, swimming, eating, drinking and relaxing.
How: Carpooling from Portland to Anacortes Ferry to Orcas Island.
Who: 25 campers.

Carpoolers will need to leave the Portland area by 7:00 AM in order to catch the 2:40 PM ferry in Anacortes. Anacortes is an hour north of Seattle and the ferry ride is 90 minutes.

Ferry Departure: The optimal departure time is 2:40 pm from Anacortes. Plan to arrive by 12:30 or 1 pm to be sure you have space on the ferry. The next ferry to Orcas isn't until 5:35.

Current Ferry cost: $43.10 for car and driver plus 13.50 for each additional passenger, round trip. There is an potential for a price increase that has not been announced. Carpooling will reduce the cost per person of the ferry trip.

For more information, here is a link to the ferry website.
http://www.wsdot.wa.g....

Carpooling information: We have reserved 5 campsites with a 2 car maximum per site included so carpooling will be necessary to prevent extra car costs of $10/car/night.

Campground information: We have five beautiful, adjacent campsites in the upper campground with a two tent maximum per site. We will discuss tent sharing at the planning meetings.

Costs: The cost per person is $24.00 and includes campsite fees for 3 nights, general camp supplies (e.g. garbage bags, paper towels), AND! Marci and David's Saturday night Spaghetti dinner with salad, garlic bread, dessert and wine around the campfire! tongue

What you will need:

Tent (or find somebody to share)
Sleeping bag
Crocs or shoes for water activities

I can take two more people if we can get someone to carry our gear. I can also share my tent, I think it can sleep five, been a long time since I set it up. I'm bringing an air mattress to sleep on. I contacted one of the people with a truck asking if he would carry gear. I've also contacted some of the people asking for rides and am waiting to hear back from them. I will be leaving from Vancouver, near I5 and Hazel Dell/63rd st exit, between 500 and 78th st exits.

Hi everyone - I just found out I have Friday and Monday off from work. THis means I can carpool with someone to Orcas. I live a few blocks away from the Gateway/99 transit center in PDX. Anyone picking up people there who has room in their car? My preference is to return earlier on Monday rather than later, if that helps anyone decide. Thank you for giving me a call at [masked] as I can't access email all the time. Sincerely, JeanMarie

Hi everyone! I am so happy to get in on this camping trip at the last second. I have only been to the San Juan's once before, and love the fact I'm going back and with new friends. HOwever due to the last minute joining, I did not take the day off from work. I would like to join everyone on Friday evening or Sat. AM, depending on Ferry Schedule. Is anyone going Fri afternoon? I am leaving straight from work in Vancouver WA (hopfully by 3 pm). Thank you for writing me at [masked]

I hope I am posting in the right place here... I'M driving a older toyota long bed pickup truck. I can take one rider. NO AC and no music at this pont. I live in salem and will be leaving salem approx 5 am on friday morn. I can haul gear. If you are close to I5 that would make it easy. Have canopy and roof rack. Room for one additional kayak to the one I am taking.

Hi Michele, at this time David and I feel like 25 is what we can reasonably handle. If this changes, it will be announced to the wait list group. Staying on the wait list is recommended since people sometimes change their plans and when space opens up some people on the wait list may no longer be able to attend. I hope this is helpful.

I had a great time, good company, beautiful scenery, left with my legs needing a rest. Thanks to the organizers and other members for creating several great memories and stories to take back "home".
    •  THE PEOPLE WERE FUN AND THE PLACE WAS NICE AND OKAY WEATHER.
    •  Thanks everyone for the great weekend! The weather was a lot better than we expected and the food, conversation, many hikes, campfires and driving around the island made for a memorable weekend. I hope to see all of you on some more events.
