This is an event sponsored by WTA and lead by Ryan Ojerio. PLease note that I will not be there.

Here are the details:

"Join fellow hikers for a day or two of trail maintenance in the Trapper Creek Wilderness. This work party, hosted by the Washington Trails Association (WTA) features an optional potluck and campout at the Skamania County Saddle Club, also known as "Camp Howe".

Our project will be to restore a section of the Observation Trail by widening the trail and helping to prevent erosion. The work site is a 1.5 mile hike in through lush Douglas-fir forest with some outstanding old growth trees. Each work party day begins with a safety talk at 8:30 sharp and concludes with cookies and sodas at 3:30 pm back at the trailhead.

WTA provides all tools and instruction, no prior experience is necessary. For more details contact SW Washington Regional Coordinator, Ryan Ojerio by phone (360) 722-2657 or email to [masked]

To register visit www.wta.org, click on the Trailwork Parties link under the Volunteer drop down menu. Carpooling is available for those interested."

Driving directions:

From Vancouver, drive east on State Route 14 (along the Columbia River) a couple of miles beyond the town of Stevenson to a blinking light intersection signed “Carson, Mount St. Helen’s Turnoff.” Take a left and follow this road (Wind River Highway 30) 15 miles north, and just beyond the Carson National Fish Hatchery keep left and cross the Wind River. Take the first right after crossing the bridge, onto Forest Service Road 5401, and the trailhead is an additional 0.4 miles. We will be meeting at Camp Howe also known as the Skamania County Saddle Club, which is on the right just after crossing Trapper Creek, within yards of the Dry Creek Trailhead parking lot. (Driving time from Vancouver: approximately 1.5 hours.)

Camping on Friday is available too. I'll be there by 5pm on Friday if folks want to come hang out before the work party starts on Saturday morning. Each day begins at 8:30 am with a safety talk/registration. The day ends at 3:30 pm at the trailhead with cookies and sodas provided by WTA.

    •  We had 6 of us from WTA on Saturday and 4 on Sunday. The weather was cold and wet, but we stayed warm working and drinking hot chocolate. Rather than camping out on Saturday, we headed back to town, but not before stopping off at the Walking Man for some refreshments. Accomplishments: 10 drain dips and 7 check dams restored. 400' of tread restoration, 300' of heavy tread reconstruction on the lower section of the Observation Trail.
