This is an event sponsored by WTA and lead by Ryan Ojerio. PLease note that I will not be there.

Here are the details:

"Join fellow hikers for a day or two of trail maintenance in the Trapper Creek Wilderness. This work party, hosted by the Washington Trails Association (WTA) features an optional potluck and campout at the Skamania County Saddle Club, also known as "Camp Howe".

Our project will be to restore a section of the Observation Trail by widening the trail and helping to prevent erosion. The work site is a 1.5 mile hike in through lush Douglas-fir forest with some outstanding old growth trees. Each work party day begins with a safety talk at 8:30 sharp and concludes with cookies and sodas at 3:30 pm back at the trailhead.

WTA provides all tools and instruction, no prior experience is necessary. For more details contact SW Washington Regional Coordinator, Ryan Ojerio by phone (360) 722-2657 or email to ryan@wta.org

To register visit www.wta.org, click on the Trailwork Parties link under the Volunteer drop down menu. Carpooling is available for those interested."

Driving directions:

From Vancouver, drive east on State Route 14 (along the Columbia River) a couple of miles beyond the town of Stevenson to a blinking light intersection signed “Carson, Mount St. Helen’s Turnoff.” Take a left and follow this road (Wind River Highway 30) 15 miles north, and just beyond the Carson National Fish Hatchery keep left and cross the Wind River. Take the first right after crossing the bridge, onto Forest Service Road 5401, and the trailhead is an additional 0.4 miles. We will be meeting at Camp Howe also known as the Skamania County Saddle Club, which is on the right just after crossing Trapper Creek, within yards of the Dry Creek Trailhead parking lot. (Driving time from Vancouver: approximately 1.5 hours.)

Nesika is a hiking club lodge located in the Columbia Gorge wildnerness and is completely off the grid. We cook on a large wood stove, and wood provides our heat and hot water. There is somewhat spotty cell phone service. Bunks with simple mattresses are provided. There is a generator, but power is turned off after bedtime. Bring a reliable headlamp or flashlight! There's also a fabulous viewpoint and great hiking trails in the area.

Distance: 4 miles with a 2000 foot elevation gain. We will climb the paved trail to the overlook and then take the Larch Mountain trail. You should be comfortable backpacking in the dark. Some sections of this trails are rocky and have steep dropoffs.

Backup plan: In the event the weather is very wet/windy we will drive up by forest road. We will still meet at Multnomah Falls.

Guest speakers:

-Chuck Chelin, long-time PCT hiker & author of a couple of trail journal websites, who will discuss BP philosophy, what’s & why’s of gear, and the nuts & bolts of trail food (nutrition, calories, vitamins; purchased vs assembled; cooked vs no cook)

-Teresa Black, author of the book One Pan Wonders and a website of the same name, who will show how to assemble simple, good-tasting meals with ingredients purchased at the local grocery store

Other presentations & discussions will include: trip planning, leadership, foot care, a round-table discussion of favorite tips & tricks; a slide presentation of highlights of PCT travel, a hike in the neighboring basin, review of 2009 trips, and plans for 2010.

Cost $30.

What to bring: We will sleep in the lodge dorms, so you don't need a tent - but if you want to camp you can bring a tent and enjoy the great campsite our organizer Claudio built there. Bring some snacks and something for breakfast Saturday - alll other meals are provided. You do not need a stove, pots, pans or any other cooking gear. So ...

You need:

Sleeping bag
Warming clothing for cold and wet weather
Headlamp and extra batteries - we will be hiking up in the dark!
Trek poles (advised)
Snacks

You do not need:

Tent
Cooking equipment or utensils - they are provided
Food

This event is only for people who have signed up to go to Nesika Lodge on November 6 and want to meet others on the event to carpool. Old Wives Tale has a great soup bar if you don't want to do a full meal - and much better food than the Lucky Lab if you do want a meal.

Want to enjoy an evening of working out and then sitting around and grabbing a bite to eat? This is the event for you!

Where
Circuit Climbing Gym
6050 SW Macadam Ave (its near the waterfront in the close in SW)
Portland

We will be doing some bouldering from 6:30 to 8:00 (Even if you don't show up until 7:00 it will be a great time!). I will be helping those who are new to the sport if you need any pointers. Bouldering is fun and an enjoyable experience!. The place is huge! There will be plenty of easy routes for those who have never climbed before. Bouldering lets you climb without the need of a harness or roping off! I will be helping and giving lessons from 6:30 to 7:00, then we will try and pair off into smaller groups based on skill level.

What you need to bring. Looser fitting clothing or gym like attire. Tight jeans or button up shirts only make the experience more difficult. Bring climbing shoes if you have them. Otherwise the gym does have shoes to rent!

Cost will be about $15 for those who are renting shoes and getting a night pass. Its worth it! A month pass is only $55 and climbing sure does beat the gym!

After climbing we will be going out to eat at Green Dragon SE 9th & Belmont.

Total miles: 8.5
Estimated hiking time: 3 hours
Elevation gain: 980 feet
Hike rating: Moderate
Weather forecast for Sunday: Overcast and low 50’s, but dry
Dogs: Yes (please be familiar with our Dog Policy, found on the Files page)
$$$: Lunch money if you want to join us at the Lucky Lab after the hike

Directions to trailhead: From NW Portland, drive north on St. Helens Rd./Hwy. 30. About 1 mile past the Yeon Ave. intersection, turn left onto Saltzman Rd. (the first left after NW 57th Ave.). Go about 0.8 miles uphill and park near the gate.

Join me and Maddy as we work out our post-Halloween ya-yas on this lovely trail! This loop has varied terrain, including challenging climbs and rolling trails. During wetter parts of the year the lower Maple Trail segments cross a number of small streams. Along Wildwood Trail between mile markers 13.5 and 12.75 are some impressive old growth trees. Many are within a few feet of the trail and some are up to six feet in diameter.

What you’ll need:
• Water resistant hiking boots/shoes (plan on mud from the recent rains)
• Two or three light layers of clothing that can be adjusted or removed as necessary
• Snacks and water
• Gloves or mittens

If the forecast changes and rain is predicted for that day:
• A water-resistant hat
• Rain jacket and pants (since this is an urban hike, I won’t turn you away if you wear cotton pants, but you’ll be much more comfortable with nylon or some other quick-drying fabric)

We should be finished hiking around 12:30 p.m.

This hike is actually a little bit more that just the Umbrella Falls in Mt Hood. We'll be doing a loop that connects several trails giving a great perspective of the multiple views from Elk Meadows. We will start from the Meadows Nordic Ski Area on the Elk Meadows trail. Shortly after we'll take the Newton Creek trail and the fun begins as we ascend on the ridge. We will be passing some boulder areas that offer some side trip for wonderful views of the mountain. Once we reach the Timberline trail, we'll turn and continue on it for a while until we reach the Umbrella Falls trail. On the way back, we'll also pass by Sahalie Falls. So if you are getting all this, we'll walk thru dense forests, open areas with great vistas, waterfalls and stream crossings.

This hike is about 10 miles with 1400' of cumulative elevation gain which makes it challenging under our rating system. The hike will take between 5 and 6 hours.

PLEASE NOTE: This hike requires crossing numerous creeks and streams, due to recent showers, I don't know how much water is coming down or if we'll find an uncrossable stream. My first priority will be safety so if we reach such a point, we'll turn back.

What to bring:
- Warm clothes (no cotton)
- Extra socks
- Good hiking shoes or boots
- Gaitors if you have them
- Rain gear
- Hat and gloves
- Food and water
- Gas money for drivers
- Northwest forest pass

Please no dogs

You may remember the annual Dressed to Kill hike? It's time to Dress to Chill. (Or Thrill!)

Let's hike through the neighborhoods of NW Portland on Halloween evening - then celebrate with pizza and beer.

Wear a costume or just dress up - we'll each put $1 into a pot at the start of the hike and then vote on the best costume at the finish - the winner gets the pot. If your costume has a hiking theme (scary hiker, injured hiker, slutty hiker, princess hiker, gangster hiker) ... even better!

We start at the NORTHWEST Lucky Lab at 19th AND Quimby NWand walk about 2 miles - looping around back to the Lucky Lab where we can enjoy pizza and beer. Please note, this is not the Lucky Lab in SE on Hawthorne.

Why aren't we hiking in the woods? Because we want people to see our costumes! If you have kids and can't make the hike, meet us at the Lucky Lab afterwards - we should return by 9 pm.

In this installment of our monthly gathering, I will be covering only the usual stuff. As some of you might have noticed, I haven't planned a lot of stuff this month and have been kind of disconnected as I've been very busy moving. Still, the monthly meeting is a great opportunity for new members to see what we are about and meet some fellow hikers as well as ask any question you may have. So come join us for some food and beer and some nice conversation.

We will be meeting at Lucky Lab in the west side. Look for the little tent signs

Hope to see you all there
