Last Chance for High Altitude Hikes! Cairn Basin or Cooper Spur?

Posted by: Lindsay Lindsay on Oct 2, 2009

I vote for Cairn Basin or Cooper Spur next Saturday! Before we have to wait another 9 months for those roads to reopen, lets hit some elevation!

    Crater Rock or Hogsback

Posted by: Harlan Sacrison Harlan Sacrison on Nov 29, 2009

There has to be people out there that'd like to go! Who wouldn't? I've never been but I'm determined to hike it in December. Don't make my first hike up a solo one! For those who don't know, it's a hike to near the summit of Hood from Timberline. I've hiked up to Palmer lift (about half way?) and I'll tell you right now it'll be an intense workout to the top, extremely cold and very windy. Ideally I'd like to go with someone who's been before but I'm feeling adventurous...

    -see ya up there!

Mist falls hike as a time filler by Wahkeena Trailhead

Posted by: Gregg (chopper) Carsen Gregg (chopper) Carsen on Oct 31, 2009

Visited the site of the original 1916 Multnomah Lodge as well as hiked up to look at Mist falls today. The rocks are kind of loose and the wet maple leaves make things kind of slick but if one takes their time the view is enjoyable. I believe that if one is comfortable doing some rock scrambling or light bouldering you can take a side trip off to the right at the last big maple tree just under the falls to find a narrow spot to climb up even higher under the falls. Didn't try it today as i was alone by myself. The old fire place is still mostly intact but is starting to fall apart. With the slick conditions and taking pictures and the side trip to scout a way of climbing even higher i spent 45 minutes total, so it's not a long hike.
The parking area can maybe hold two or three very small cars and is the first small turnout west of the Wahkeena falls Trailhead. Here is a link from where i found out about the little hike http://www.portlandhikersfieldguide.org/wiki/Mist_Falls_Hike
