Snowshoe to Tilly Jane A frame for an overnight stay

Let's snowshoe to the Tilly Jane A frame and stay overnight inside the shelter. It is about 2.7 miles, 1900' elevation to the shelter. There are tables and a wood burning stove down stairs and a sleeping loft upstairs. You will want to bring a pad, sleeping bag and food for Saturday night, Sunday morning and lunch. We can melt snow for extra water. Sunday morning we will take an optional snowshoe trip up higher on the mountain getting views of Elliot glacier. The a frame is ran by the Oregon Nordic club and you must have a reservation to stay overnight, I have made the reservation and paid for it. The charge is 18$ per person. You will need to mail me a check soon after you sign up. My address is 17101 S.W.Binddale ct. Tigard 97224. If you cancel early you will get a refund.

Difficulty: Moderately strenuous.

Pace: Moderate. I like to stop and take pictures and I am not a super speedy snowshoer.

No special technical skills are required but we may have some traverses where the trail will not be so flat and smooth. Dress in layers! NO COTTON! Please do not show up in blue jeans.

Bring only synthetic, wool, silk clothing. Down is good providing you have a waterproof shell.

Stuff to bring:

One dinner, breakfast and lunch

sleeping pad (the loft is boards) and sleeping bag

Extra gloves.
Extra socks
Warm cap
Windproof/Waterproof shell or parka
Long underwear recommended - silk or polyester - wear it or pack it. You should have enough clothing to be warm if you are injured and cannot hike. It's harder to stay warm when you are not moving.

Trek poles with powder baskets

Always carry the ten essentials including:

Headlamp
First aid kit
Whistle Pocket
Knife
Matches or lighter
Map and compass

Optional:

A balaclava or face wrap is a good idea too
Ski goggles in case of wind and blowing snow
Sit pad

Drivers will need a snow park pass

Who wants to drive? Cindy can take 4 and I believe Pete can take 4 (assuming you want to drive, Pete) Any other drivers here?

I'm coming down with a cold and will not be able to snowshoe this weekend. I'm changing my rsvp now so someone on the waitlist can join. If no one takes my spot, I'll send the check. Sorry to miss this :( but I'm just not feeling well enough.

2 friends who had booked independently just canceled b/c they both have colds. So, technically, there is room for 2 more...

Pete, you might talk with Steve S. about that and see if anyone else wants to go - those 2 tkts would be payable to him at Gateway...

I've never snow shoed, but I've been waiting for a trip that didn't say beginners not recommended and that I actually snagged a spot for in time. I will gladly give up my spot if it is strongly advised beginners don't go. However, my fingers are tightly crossed that this is not the case!

That's 8 miles round tripincluding the secondary stop? 5.4 to the A frame and back, based on the original description?

5.4 to the A frame but 2000ft climb in 2.6mi. Some steep, and one traverse on the side of a hill that can seem super sketch to a beginner. I'd say it's an intermediate shoe. Start off with stuff like White River and Newton Creek, Trillium Lake, Twin Lakes, Marble Mtn Snowpark on St. Helens, and then this is the next step up.

Oh yey, we now have an even gender ratio. Wondering how far up people are interested in going on Sunday morning... Bringing snowshoes and microspikes, but could bring crampons instead of the spikes if people are int'd in going up the ridge line toward Cooper Spur (~2000ft up from the A-frame). Snow should be awesome this weekend and forecast for Sunday is gorgeous!

    Hey Pete,
I was wondering if you had a rough idea of when we would be getting back into Portland Sunday? I am trying to plan accordingly..

Amanda, My best guess would be late afternoon maybe around 5.

Hey all. Please accept my sincere apology for my previous post. My NY sarcasm sometimes comes across as being mean to those who aren't used to it when in fact it is truly meant as humor. If you were offended please know it was all in jest. Of course I didn't think the all lady thing was intentional.
