Larch Mountain

TOTAL MILES: 14.4 miles
ELEVATION GAIN: 4010 ft
PACE: “Quick” (~2.0 mph)
DIFFICULTY RATING: Very Difficult
ESTIMATED HIKING TIME: 7-9 hours
PERMITS: None

We will start out at Multnomah Falls and start a steady climb up Trail #441 all the way up to Sherrard Point, where, if the weather cooperates we will have view of Mt. Hood, M. St Helens, Mt. Adams, Mt. Jefferson and Mt. Rainier. Along the way we’ll pass numerous waterfalls, campsites, five bridge crossings of Multnomah Creek, and best of all, the knowledge that we made it up to Sherrard Point, the hard way. We will have lunch at the top and then head back down to the trailhead the way we came up.

The early forecast calls for partly cloudy and only has a 10% of rain, but this is springtime in Oregon and forecast can change almost hourly. So please come prepared for rain.

Please note that there is a MANUAL waiting list for this hike. What this means is that if a spot opens up everyone on the waiting list will automatically receive an e-mail notifying them of the opening. The first person (whether on the waiting list or not) to RSVP gets the spot.

What to bring:
• Sturdy hiking boots/shoes (with a change of socks)
• Two or three light layers of clothing that can be adjusted as necessary (NO COTTON!!!)
• Rain Gear
• The 10 Essentials *
• Safety whistle, preferably on a cord around your neck (highly recommended)
• Trekking poles (never a bad idea)
• Lunch, snacks and plenty of water
• Camera (optional)

*Navigation, Sun protection, Insulation, Illumination, First Aid, Fire, Repair Kit/Tools, Nutrition, Hydration, Emergency Shelter. For a more detailed description, check out “The Ten Essentials” on the Portland Hiking Meetup Group’s FILES page.

CARPOOLING: RT mileage is 50 miles, give or take; we suggest a mileage donation of 10 cents/mile/person, or $5.00. Exact change makes it easier to divide among our drivers. No one will be turned away for an inability to contribute. Thanks!

The great weather and addition of the Larch Mountain Crater loop made for an excellent hike - thanks to Brad for leading it! My GPS says the total mileage was 16.7 miles in 9 hours 8 minutes and our average speed was 1.8 mph, including stops.

I was unaware of the time. Glad I got the miles and elevation. No knee problems. No scratches. Good weather. Thanks Brad
