TOTAL MILES: 12.1 miles
ELEVATION GAIN: 4800 ft.
PACE: “Quick” (~2.0 mph)
DIFFICULTY RATING: EXTREME (this is not a beginners hike)
ESTIMATED HIKING TIME: 8-10 hours
PERMITS: None needed.
This is arguably the hardest hike in the Columbia Gorge; it will test your stamina and leg strength.
The plan is to head up Starvation Ridge past Warren Lake, then up to the summit to enjoy the view of the communication towers, and if the weather is nice some mountains. We will have a rest and a bite to eat at the top. Then we will return to the trailhead via the Defiance Trail, this is also a very steep trail, hiking poles are strongly recommended.
Please note that there is a MANUAL waiting list for this hike. What this means is that if a spot opens up everyone on the waiting list will automatically receive an e-mail notifying them of the opening. The first person (whether on the waiting list or not) to RSVP gets the spot.
What to bring:
• Sturdy hiking boots/hiking shoes (trail running shoes not recommended for this one)
• Two or three light layers of clothing that can be adjusted as necessary (NO COTTON!!!)
• Rain gear
• Safety whistle, preferably on a cord around your neck (highly recommended)
• The 10 essentials*
• Trekking poles (very good idea, your knees will thank you)
• Lunch, snacks and plenty of water
*Navigation, Sun protection, Insulation, Illumination, First Aid, Fire, Repair Kit/Tools, Nutrition, Hydration, Emergency Shelter. For a more detailed description, check out “The Ten Essentials” on the Portland Hiking Meetup Group’s FILES page.
CARPOOLING: RT mileage is 100 miles, give or take; we suggest a mileage donation of 10 cents/mile/person, or $10.00. Exact change makes it easier to divide among our drivers. No one will be turned away for an inability to contribute. Thanks!
