Mt. Defiance Loop or The Misery Loves Company Hike

TOTAL MILES: 12.1 miles
ELEVATION GAIN: 4800 ft.
PACE: “Quick” (~2.0 mph)
DIFFICULTY RATING: EXTREME (this is not a beginners hike)
ESTIMATED HIKING TIME: 8-10 hours
PERMITS: None needed.

This is arguably the hardest hike in the Columbia Gorge; it will test your stamina and leg strength.

The plan is to head up Starvation Ridge past Warren Lake, then up to the summit to enjoy the view of the communication towers, and if the weather is nice some mountains. We will have a rest and a bite to eat at the top. Then we will return to the trailhead via the Defiance Trail, this is also a very steep trail, hiking poles are strongly recommended.

Please note that there is a MANUAL waiting list for this hike. What this means is that if a spot opens up everyone on the waiting list will automatically receive an e-mail notifying them of the opening. The first person (whether on the waiting list or not) to RSVP gets the spot.

What to bring:
• Sturdy hiking boots/hiking shoes (trail running shoes not recommended for this one)
• Two or three light layers of clothing that can be adjusted as necessary (NO COTTON!!!)
• Rain gear
• Safety whistle, preferably on a cord around your neck (highly recommended)
• The 10 essentials*
• Trekking poles (very good idea, your knees will thank you)
• Lunch, snacks and plenty of water

*Navigation, Sun protection, Insulation, Illumination, First Aid, Fire, Repair Kit/Tools, Nutrition, Hydration, Emergency Shelter. For a more detailed description, check out “The Ten Essentials” on the Portland Hiking Meetup Group’s FILES page.

CARPOOLING: RT mileage is 100 miles, give or take; we suggest a mileage donation of 10 cents/mile/person, or $10.00. Exact change makes it easier to divide among our drivers. No one will be turned away for an inability to contribute. Thanks!

Beautiful day. I question whether I'll do this twice on the 24 Hour Defiance in a few weeks. Thanks Brad (and Saint ) for leading.

This hike is challenging but enjoyable. It has a reputation as an unattractive training hike. I found lots of things enjoyable about the hike including variation in terrain, views, wildflowers and 2 waterfalls. Great that it was a sunny day. Thank you zebras for another well led hike!

I hope someone will make use of my spot. I got onto a Middle Sister climb and since it's a once a season chance, I'm taking it. Have fun.

First hike with the group! Planning on taking the Max to Gateway. How does the car pooling typically work in terms of guaranteeing enough drivers?

Speaking of which, I think a NW Forest Pass is required to park at the Starvation Creek Trailhead right?

      June 7, 2013

    • Brad M

No pass is required at this trailhead

I re-injured myself and need to cancel my hikes until they can put me together again.

I believe I need more conditioning to do this one at a decent pace. I'd love to do it, but I don't want to go until I am in better hiking condition. Thanks for organizing this, Brad. Abby

I've done Defiance a few times. It is definitely a very vertical adventure that tests your endurance and stamina. An excellent hike.

Sounds fun. At least it's an established trail.
