Forest Park Firelane 1, Chestnut and Nature Trail Loop

Enjoy a 3.5-mile hike deep in the heart of Forest Park. We'll hike Firelane 1 to the Wildwood Trail, heading downhill on the Chestnut Trail, then uphill on the Nature Trail, climbing several switchbacks and gaining 420 feet in less than a mile.

This hike is rated as Moderate, with an accumulated elevation gain of approximately 700 feet.

The hike should take about 1.5 -- 2 hours, at a rate of 2-1/4 to 2-1/2 MPH, including picture time. We can stop at the Skyline Drive-in, if you'd like, to grab an ice cream cone and a sandwich after our hike. My cell phone:[masked]-1773.

This hike's manual waiting list means everyone on the waiting list receives an email notice as soon as a spot opens up, though any member can grab the spot. First come, first served.

Please leave pets at home for this hike. Thanks!

P.S. This is the same hike I cancelled a couple weeks ago.

Beautiful weather, nice group. Kudos to Lance for hiking all the way up Firelane 1 to join us at the Chestnut/Nature Trail junction.

Sorry, I cannot make the hike today. A business demand cropped up.

Forgot to mention in the post below. Though the trails are in great shape, I can't say the same about NW Forest Lane. Potholes you could lose a Buick in. Take it easy driving down the lane.

You can do it if you avoid the potholes. No hot-dogging!

OK, I'm game. But now no places left, I'm back on the waitlist.

I suggest you bring trekking poles if you have them. They'll help propel you up the Nature Trail and save your knees on your way down the Wildwood and Chestnut Trails. Also, bring plenty of water and a snack or two. We'll take a short break at the halfway point, at the end of the Chestnut Trail and the start of the Nature Trail. Picture time under the spreading chestnut, the only one in Forest Park ... maybe the only one in Portland. Nice picnic table, too.

I don't have a car I can take down that road. If I can park at the entrance to the park and hitch a ride with someone from there, I could make it.

If you can make it to the intersection of NW 53rd and Forest Lane, I'll pick you and lance up and drive you the quarter-mile to the trailhead.

I'll be getting there on public transportation. Is the gated trail head close to NW Forest Lane and NW 53rd Drive?

    July 1, 2013

    • Richard

The trailhead is about 1/4-mile down Forest Lane from the junction off 53rd Drive. If you call me when you get there I'll pick you up at the intersection. Give me an idea of about what time you think you'll get there.

Unfortunately I just got a gig on Tuesday, so won't be able to join you. Have a great hike!

Did the hike this afternoon and the trails are in excellent condition. The Forest Park Conservancy volunteers did a very nice job of clearing three trees that were lying across the Wildwood, Chestnut and Nature Trails. Looking forward to our hike!

Being on the waitlist is pointless. I'll plan to be there since most of the time people do not show up in the end.

4 hours prior doesn't allow much time for others on the wait list. As someone who has inadvertently been a no-show with the automated process, I very much appreciate the meetups with a manual wait list, don't want to see Richard change his process.

The process seems to me the most fair to everyone involved, even though I am, as usual, on Richard's waitlist.
