Rafting Adventure on the Deschutes (with Laurie!)

This trip is FUN. No two ways about it!

I lived in Portland for many years and was an Organizer w/ the PDX Hiking Meetup. I have since moved to the Midwest, but am returning for a couple of weeks vacation, and can't wait to run this river again! This will be the fourth time I've put this trip together for this Meetup group, and we had a blast every time. It's a fantastic way to meet people, so don't hesitate to come by yourself.

Price is a deal!

All Star rafting normally charges $90/adult and $80/kids 6-14 for this full-day trip, but we are getting a $10/person discount for our group, so $80/adult and $70/kids 6-14.

NOTE: Meetup only allows me to program in one payment amount. If you are bringing a kid, please pay for yourself and then contact me about how to arrange payment for your child.

PayPal fee = $2.70/person, so total payment is $82.70/person

Here's what they have to say about it:

"This exciting day of Deschutes River rafting includes 18 miles running the famous rapids of the Deschutes River!  We splash and giggle our way through Wapinitia, Boxcar, Surf City, Oak Springs, White River, Upper and Lower Elevator, Trestle and Wreck rapids. The whitewater fun is separated by calm pools where we have the chance to enjoy the scenery, swim and practice our water fighting skills.  The trip starts at 10 am and ends around 4:15 pm.  A deluxe riverside BBQ lunch (chicken, hot dogs, and veggie burgers), shuttle, all boating equipment, and our skilled guides are provided in the price of the trip."

Car Pool:

I will be camping near Maupin, so won't be participating in the car pool. To car pool, meet at the Gateway Transit Center Parking Garage at 7:30am, and leave the Garage NOT LATER THAN 7:45AM. It's a 2-hour drive, and you need to park in Maupin and walk to All Star by 10am. I will meet you there.

The address is:

All Star Rafting, 405 Deschutes Ave., Maupin OR  97037. Park around the corner in front of the school. Do NOT park on the street in front of All Star...they ticket there.

Here's what you need to bring (NOTE: the weather WILL be warm and sunny!):

  • River sandals, tennis shoes, or neoprene booties (not flip-flops)
  • Sunscreen and chap stick (SPF 15)
  • Sun hat or visor
  • Sun Glasses
  • T-shirt and nylon shorts or a bathing suit if the weather is warm and sunny
  • Synthetic fleece sweater and windbreaker if the weather is cool or cloudy
  • Secure strap for eye glasses (croakies or chums)
  • Change of clothes for drive home including a second pair of shoes
  • Water bottle
  • Disposable waterproof camera (optional of course)

Also:

  • Suggested donation of $19 each gas money for your driver (95 miles x 10 cents/mile). No one is ever refused a ride for inability to pay
  • Money for dinner on the way home (should your car want to stop)

I am REALLY looking forward to seeing a lot of my old friends, and to meeting many new ones!

My fellow guest/partner can drive if needed. We can seat three more people. The car is a Honda CRV, more comfortably seating two more people.

I have a white Subaru Outback.

I can drive and take 3 other people as long as you are not allergic to dogs as my dog often rides in my car. Feel free to email me for my number if you have questions

I'm heading out to Fossil right now, where there is limited cell phone reception, and there's not much I can do from there if you were to call me, anyway. If you ARE planning to drive and take carpoolers from Gateway, would you please let people know here...? I would hate for anyone to be stranded at Gateway without a ride. Many thanks, and I'm looking forward to seeing you on Saturday!

Is there a phone number for someone in case we need to get a hold of anyone? Or a car we should be looking for? So we know who you are? Thanks.

who is planning to car pool besides Rick? and how many drivers?
I'd rather not drive but can if needed. Also don't want to stop at Gateway if there is no reason to.
Looking forward to meeting you all and getting wet!

thanks for the info, Laurie. I'll camp somewhere on the way, maybe Little Crater Lake. I'll be at All Star by 10am Sat. morning. see ya!

We did this trip a couple years ago and camped at Little Crater Lake the night before. It is a beautiful campground and only 45ish minutes to Maupin from there. Have fun!

    Hi Laurie,
where are you camping? I decided I want to leave Portland on Friday morning and camp the night before the rafting trip. Would you recommend Beavertrail Campground?

If any one in the group would like to do the same, I'd be glad to ride-share.

    See you soon.

      Hi Hannelore!

We're camping close to Fossil, so nowhere near Maupin.

Not sure which one Beavertail Campground is, but I know there aren't any NICE campgrounds anywhere near Maupin. There are lots of them along the river, but they are just flat, dusty fields with no water or anything else. And very crowded. The nicest one is the park in the center of Maupin (on the river), but again, very crowded. At least it has some grass and trees.

Go as early as you can on Friday in order to get a spot...it's elbow to elbow there on the weekends!

      Can't wait to see you!

I just googled Dexchutes River adventures and there one-day is only 13 miles and it costs $75. So this sounds reasonable to me.

Not sure about that deal, but I've been there two weeks ago in a group of 8 and paid only $28 per person... we used Deschutes river adventures...

(oops, accidentally hit Enter before I was done!). Anyway, they include length of trip (full vs. half day), day of the week (Saturdays are the most expensive, weekdays the least), number of people in the group, and, on the Deschutes, whether or not you run the lower 3 miles. That last stretch involves pulling out of the river, letting the guides load all the rafts and guests onto buses for the portage around off-limits Native American reservation, and then putting back in for what I think is the very best part of the trip...beautiful, serene, calm basalt canyons and lots of historical artifacts on the shores. The outfitters also need to pay for special permits to do that section. It was on that stretch that I got to see bald eagles dive straight into the water and come up with fish. This is the same price the other major outfitters in Maupin charge for this exact same trip. Perhaps your trip differed from this?

      July 30, 2013

    • Peter

Yeah, we had no guide on our trip and probably didn't do the very last segment. And we did it in 4 hours... but it was on Saturday... :-) still pretty fun trip! Enjoy!!!

Hi Laurie, My daughter would like to come but has a party that night, so I have a couple of questions to see if we can make it work. Will our cars be parked at the 4:15 take out location? Do you know how long it takes to get to Portland from where we park our cars? Look forward to this trip. Thanks
