McNeil Point

  • Jul 19, 2013 · 9:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

TOTAL MILES: 9.6 miles
ELEVATION GAIN: 2200 ft (max 6100')
PACE: “Quick” (~2.5 mph)
DIFFICULTY RATING: Difficult
ESTIMATED HIKING TIME: 6 hours
PERMITS: NW Forest Pass (drivers)

**RSVPs will open tonight at 7:30**

CARPOOLING: RT mileage is 100 miles, give or take; we suggest a mileage donation of 10 cents/mile/person, or $10.00. Exact change makes it easier to divide among our drivers. No one will be turned away for an inability to contribute. Thanks!

This is one of those “classic” Mt Hood hikes, as evidenced by the crowds that this trail attracts on sunny weekends, so let’s avoid the crowds by going on a Friday. I’m lifting this one more or less straight from Sullivan’s 3rd edition, #70 (Thanks again, Mr Sullivan!!), but here’s the plan. After pulling our wilderness permit at the 4 way intersection we’ll hop onto the Timberline trail and go “behind” Bald Mountain and climb up to our first break at the outstanding viewpoint of Mt Hood and the Muddy Fork. From here its back onto the Timberline trail for another couple of miles to the turnoff for the McNeil Point shelter, where we’ll stop for a nice leisurely lunch as we enjoy the views (Weather Gods permitting). After lunch we’ll retrace our steps until we hit an unmarked turnoff that will take us “in front of” Bald Mountain , where we’ll enjoy one last glorious look at Mt Hood before reentering the trees and heading back to our cars and home, and hopefully a stop for a well-deserved post hike bite and beer.

Please note that there is a MANUAL waiting list for this hike. What this means is that if a spot opens up everyone on the waiting list will automatically receive an e-mail notifying them of the opening. The first person (whether on the waiting list or not) to RSVP gets the spot.

NO DOGS, please.

What to bring:
• Sturdy hiking boots/shoes with at least one change of socks
• Two or three light layers of clothing that can be adjusted or removed as necessary (NO COTTON!!!)
• Safety whistle, preferably on a cord around your neck (highly recommended)
• Sunscreen and bug spray
• Rain gear
• The 10 essentials*
• Trekking poles (never a bad idea)
• Lunch, snacks and plenty of water

*Navigation, Sun protection, Insulation, Illumination, First Aid, Fire, Repair Kit/Tools, Nutrition, Hydration, Emergency Shelter. For a more detailed description, check out “The Ten Essentials” on the Portland Hiking Meetup Group’s FILES page.

9am is the time we leave the parking garage?

    • Zachary

Ideally, yes, but it is always a good idea to get there a few minutes early. Also, for this one we won't be meeting in the garage- we'll be across the street.

This is the detail I was unaware of... For the record I was not a 'no show' missed you guys. But I did 12 miles to Tunnel falls by myself and it was great

Anyone up to going to Multnomah Falls for a small hike up the waterfall? Would be a great day to for photos and splashing in the water at the bottom.
