A weekend in the Painted Hills

  • May 7, 2010 · 6:00 PM

This trip was originally planned for the first weekend of May, but the overwhelming response and enthusiastic interest inspired me to reconfigure it to accommodate more people. It will now happen twice, on two back-to-back weekends, and I will stay in the area during the week in between. Those who signed up for the original posting, both Yes RSVP's and those on the Waiting List, are being given first chance to sign up for this one. After Sun. April 11th, any remaining spots will be opened up to the rest of y'all. But you can go ahead and sign up on the Waiting List now even if you weren't on the original list, and I'll take care of the rest. FYI, there is a limit of 28 people per weekend due to the limits of the hiking permits for the off-trail Painted Hills hike. There is also a $15/person fee for the guided hike (plus the .75 cent Amazon processing fee). I'm still working out the details, but sign up now and mark your calendar for this Fri. 5/7-Sun. 5/9 camping/hiking/biking trip. Here are the basics I'm working on in conjunction with the Oregon Paleo Lands Institute: --car camping, most likely at a state park, most likely next to a river *bring your own food *Sat. night group potluck --exploring back roads by bike *using bike routes mapped out by the Institute --an off-trail hike through the fossil beds, led by someone from the Institute (there is a fee of $15/person for this) --LOTS of fabulous picture-taking opportunities for all you photographers, both landscape and wildflowers There will be a pre-trip planning meeting a couple of weeks out and all logistical details will be announced well before the trip.

I was very impressed w/the group camping experience! Everyone was willing to share. I have to thank Celeste for lending me a pot to cook in, "Deewayne" for checking on my attempt to cook Fettuccini and Julie for a , Hard-boiled egg for a morning Bike ride. And esp. Jerry for driving. You guys have to know that Yvonne brought all of her camping gear and culinary expertise, on a bus! Now that's strength & organization!!!

In spite of a near roll over auto accident into a desert ditch on the way home (careful of them there locals), this was a wonderful trip! A must see region that deserves more time for exploration. As ususal, a great mix of folks, both kind and friendly. Laurie is the glue that held it all together. Thanks for all that you do Laurie!
BTW, who made that Asian noodle salad? :)

    Hi folks,
If you haven't left yet, could I borrow a thermorest mattress and maybe a tent?
I am leaving from a conference a little unprepared but not worth driving all the way back to Portland from Mt Hood.
    Thanks in advance.
    See you all soon!

I'm working up a spreadsheet of who is driving and who is riding. I think I've got some things mixed up. Please msg me if you see this and you are driving. Please list how many people/bikes are confirmed riding with you, how many people you can accommodate (if you are willing to take more), how many bikes you can carry and what time you will depart.

So far I've got one confirmed passenger and one bicycle. If anyone still needs a ride I have room for two more people and one more bike. The plan is to leave PDX by 4:30pm Friday.

Debbie and I signed up for lemon bars for Saturday's potluck. But that's not enough, so I'll be making my almost famous Italian-style fire grilled veggies. These are tasty and your mother would approve. The metal tray that the veggies are being grilled on can also be used for sausages and other meats, if needed. Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Any ideas of what I should bring to the potluck on Saturday?

So, it looks like I'm giving Amber a ride. I could take Yvonne as well, if someone had room for my bike. An extra spot in a bike rack, perhaps? Or even in the back of someone's pick-up would work. Let me know by phone/text or email:[masked] or [masked]

I have at least one spot open in my vehicle. Julie is carpoolong with me and I am waiting for confirmation from another member. I can take 3 plus myself. I plan on having a two bike rack. So far the plan is to leave tomorrow around 4.30.

    Hi everyone,

I am actually in need of a ride as well. 1 person, no bike, light luggage. I work N. of Beaverton, but can easily take public transit anywhere downtown and can leave anytime after 4 pm. Thanks!

OK, some last-minute shifting around, but I think we're all good to go now. If you haven't paid yet, please do so ASAP. NOTE: my sketchy agenda from the pre-trip planning meeting is now posted on the Files page of this site. Anyone new to the trip or needing reminders can access it there. See you all Friday!

Sounds like I have a carpool lined up. Thanks to so many you for your offers to help out!

I'm bringing a hybrid and also would prefer an easier trail ride.

Hey, peeps. Just hopping on board last minute here. Haven't been to any meetings or anything. Can someone fill me in on the plan? I have a impreza outback wagon, so I could take 3 people if it weren't for my bike (no rack yet). Could I possibly put it on someone elses's rack?

For what it's worth I can only offer a one-way ride out early Friday afternoon as I'm doing a two-day side trip before returning to PDX. I've a pickup w/ extra cab so I can take one other person (comfortably) or two others (uncomfortably) +1 bike in the bed- more if someone has a bike rack that'll fit a 2" hitch receiver). Let me know! [masked]

Hi All -- I was going to carpool with Scott, but he has injured his ankle and had to cancel. Is anyone else leaving around 4-4:30 on Friday who still has room? I am not bringing a bike, but did plan to throw in a small portable grill. I would rather ride along than drive out by myself. I live in Sellwood, but have options to leave my car in NE Portland or near Mall 205.

FYI, there are verifiable rumors of a full keg of Widmer beer being brought to the potluck, so you may want to adjust your grocery list!

Who all is planning on mountain biking or road biking? I can't decide which bike to bring! Browsing over our options at the Paleo Lands Institute site, it looks like we have some good choices either way. Any thoughts?

Hi. I thought I'd just posted a comment/request, but don't see it...so I'll try more briefly. I have a prior commitment for May 3, so can't attend mtg. Is there anyone out there who would like to share a ride over and back? I live in inner SE. I could take 2 w/bikes, or be happy to ride in someone's vehicle. If so, please contact me...I'll probably ask you about what went on at the mtg, too! Thanks. Jerry

There will be a few different options for the bike ride day, so you can choose the level of challenge you want. We'll talk about it at the planning meeting next Monday.

How many miles is the bike ride on Sunday? I would like to get in at least 30.

Martin, I hope you received my recent email explaining the agenda and announcing the pre-trip planning meeting (Monday 5/3 at Lucky Lab on SE Hawthorne, 6:30pm). Our hike starts at 9am on Saturday, so you're probably going to want to figure how to get there Friday night.

Wont be making it to premeeting, but will be driving to location from Timberline Friday night arriving late. Let me know the coordinates and I'm there!

Refunds offered if:

  • the Meetup is cancelled
  • the Meetup is rescheduled
  • you can cancel at least 14 day(s) before the Meetup

Additional notes: Please note the 14-day cancellation policy. I'm going to be a bit hard-ass about it because there are so many people who want to go and last-minute cancellations just won't work.

Payments you make go to the organizer, not to Meetup. You must make refund requests to the organizer.
