Central Salmon River Exploratory Hike

TOTAL MILES: 7.2 miles

ELEVATION GAIN:  900 ft

PACE:   “Quick” (~2.0 to 2.5 mph)

DIFFICULTY RATING:  Easy

ESTIMATED HIKING TIME:  5-6 hours

PERMITS:  NW Forest Permit

MEETING TIME: 7:45 am

CARPOOLING: RT mileage is 90 miles, give or take; we suggest a mileage donation of 10 cents/mile/person, or $9.00. Exact change makes it easier to divide among our drivers. No one will be turned away for an inability to contribute.  Thanks!

HIKE DESCRIPTION: This popular portion of the Salmon River Trail begins with a riverside stroll among huge old growth trees.  At 2 miles, the path leaves the river and climbs to a bluff with a view of the Salmon River’s rugged upper canyon, where inaccessible waterfalls roar below.

The group may go out for food and beverages after the hike.

Please note that there is a MANUAL waiting list for this hike. What this means is that if a spot opens up everyone on the waiting list will automatically receive an e-mail notifying them of the opening.  The first person to log in and RSVP, whether on the waiting list or not, gets the spot.

What to bring:

• Sturdy hiking boots/shoes with at least one change of socks

• Two or three light layers of clothing that can be adjusted as necessary (NO COTTON or BLUE JEANS !!!)
• Sunscreen & bug spray

• Rain gear

• Safety whistle, preferably on a cord around your neck (highly recommended)

• The 10 essentials*

• Trekking poles (never a bad idea)

• Lunch, snacks and plenty of water

*Navigation, Sun protection, Insulation, Illumination, First Aid, Fire, Repair Kit/Tools, Nutrition, Hydration, Emergency Shelter.  For a more detailed description, check out “The Ten Essentials” on the Portland Hiking Meetup Group’s FILES page.

Does anyone on the west side want to carpool from the Barber Transit Center to Gateway? We would need to meet around 7:15. This may help us bypass the 84 west bound (cluster) shutdown this weekend. See me an email or text at[masked] before 7 tomorrow.

I have a pass, but if the road it's bad my Camry is not a willing participate. Burnt Lake made it cry... I can bring my pass with another driver. Do you know the congdon of the road in? I have very low clearance.

    Hi Everyone,

I am wondering where I can get the NW Forest pass?

I usually get mine at REI. I believe that the Big 5 sport stores sell them. We will be right by the Zig Zag Ranger station, which also sells them.
