This fall weather has been so nice and I have
really enjoyed some spectacular outings but it's time to start getting ready for
some great snow shoe trips. This is one of my favorite destinations to snow shoe
on Mt.Hood, it is on the seldom used north side and the views can be awesome.
Also there is usually better weather on this side. For this trip we will snow
shoe 2.7 miles and 1900' elevation to the Tilly Jane a frame and spend the
night. You should bring everything normally brought for a overnight backpack
except your tent. This would include one dinner, one lunch and one breakfast.
The floor upstairs at the a frame is wood and it is hard so bring a good pad and sleeping bag.
There is a stove for heat and melting snow for water, you will want to bring
your backpack stove for cooking and I will bring my water filter to share. The
next morning we will have an optional snow shoe going to the stone hut above the
tree line. This will give you a up close look at Elliot glacier and it's head
wall. Many times from here you can hear the glacier moving. We come back down
the same way passing by the a frame and head on out. The a frame is operated by
the Oregon Nordic club and they charge 15$ per person per night. I have already
got and paid for the permit. Once you have signed up you will need to send me a
check for 15$ I will send my address to the ones who sign up.This is a moderate
paced snow shoe but you will need to be somewhat conditioned for the elevation
There is a no dog policy at the a frame.
Absolutely no cotton for this outing.
Driving distance is about 150 miles round trip, 15$ if you are riding. Snow
park permit if you are driving.
There is a out house bathroom (it is in the same building) , bring your
own tp and hand sanitizer.
