This might be our last chance to climb Silver Star Mountain before the trail is covered in snow. There will be a little ice and some residual snow, but overall it looked pretty clear in a recent trip report: http://www.portlandhikers.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=17576
For this hike, we'll start at the Grouse Vista Trailhead. We'll either climb or return via the Tarbell Trail loop that takes us past Sturgeon Rock. There's a description here:
We meet at Gateway and leave promptly at 8:30. Please arrive a little earlier.
Distance: 8.5 miles
Gain: 2040 feet
Pace: Moderate at 2 to 2.5 mph. Not trying to break speed records.
Difficulty: Moderate +
Trip time: All day. This is not a short drive!
Please dress in layers as we will get warm climbing but it will be cold at the top (4000 ft). Bring enough warm clothing to be comfortable when we stop for lunch at the summit.
What to bring:
A headlamp. We should be back to our cars before dark, but the days are getting shorter. It's always good to be prepared.
Water, lunch and/or a snack
A rain shell (20% chance of sprinkles later in the day)
Hat and gloves
Extra warm layers you can add as needed
The 10 Essentials
Optional: Trek poles or traction devices like Yak Trax in case of ice
No jeans and no cotton please!
If you carpool, please bring $7 cash for your driver. Round trip is about 70 miles.
No dogs please.
