A non-hiking friend wanted to know if daily conditioning at the gym would translate to being able to do a Gorge hike. After giving him Sullivan's book, he picked Dog Mountain. Since the hike does not take too long and he is coming from Salem, I will start this hike at 9:00 am, which is a really late start for me. Sunny weather predicted for this weekend. We will do the more scenic route on the way up and the Augspurger trail on the way down.
Elevation gain is 2820 ft
Distance is 6.9 miles roundtrip
Difficulty rating: Difficult due to distance and elevation gain
Driving distance is approximately 100 miles round trip so $10 to the drivers. Plus there is a $1 toll each way at the Bridge of the Gods.
Please be in good shape to do this hike. Although there is no rush to get done, the days are still short. I do not plan to be hiking in the dark but please bring a headlamp just in case we do not finish the hike before dark.
I like to stop for refreshments after hiking so if you need to be back at a certain time, please drive your own car. After the hike, we can go to Walking Man Brewery for drinks and food.
Please bring the 10 essentials and layers of warm clothing. In other words, dress for cold weather.
The 'ten essentials' to always have in your pack generally include: Map/compass (and advance understanding of where you're going!), sun protection, extra clothes, extra food, extra water, headlamp/flashlight (and spare batteries), first aid kit, matches/firestarter, knife/tools, and a whistle if you need to signal for help. You should always be prepared in case you get separated from the rest of the group and/or have to spend a night on your own in the wilderness.
- As a Meetup organizer, I'm an unpaid volunteer. While I always try to ensure a safe and enjoyable outing for everyone, by signing up for this event you assume full responsibility for your own health, safety, and well-being for its entire duration, including while traveling to and from both the meeting place and destination.
