Backpacking Basics: an REI class exclusively for our Meetup members

We're partnering again with REI for this beginning-of-the-season refresher/introduction to backpacking. REI holds these classes for the general public, but they do fill up quickly. This opportunity is exclusively for members of the Portland Hiking Meetup.

This class has a slightly different emphasis than the Lightweight Backing class being held on 5.26; it's geared more toward true beginners (but don't let that stop you from coming if you DO have some experience and think you might benefit).

Class description:

In this show-and-tell session REI will take the mystery out of backpacking. We will cover the basics of backpacking gear, including how to choose the right pack and select the proper clothing and footwear to keep you comfortable. Come and learn how to get started in this fun activity. No experience necessary!

While REI does use the gear they carry as examples, there's never a heavy sales pitch. I've always found these classes to be informative and helpful.

Plan in plenty of time to make it out to Clackamas and find the REI in the mall...they hold the classes out there because it's got the right-sized classroom.

Class runs 1.5-2 hours. Store closes at 9pm, so we definitely have to be done by then.

See you there!

I thought it was very informative. Mike was very helpful explaining the basic details to get me started having fun on the trail for a night or nine :)

Hi Laurie. I noticed the announcement for this didn't find its way to my email in-box like the Lightweight Backpacking one did. Just wanted to let you know there might have been a glitch.
