Hamilton Mountain Loop and Beacon Rock Hike

Hamilton Mountain

TOTAL MILES:  ~9.5 miles

ELEVATION GAIN: 2100 ft

PACE: “Moderate (~ 2.5 mph)

DIFFICULTY RATING: Difficult

ESTIMATED HIKING TIME: 5.0 – 7.0  hours

Beacon Rock

 TOTAL MILES:  1.8 miles

ELEVATION GAIN: 680 ft

PACE: “Moderate (~ 2.5 mph)

DIFFICULTY RATING: Difficult

ESTIMATED HIKING TIME: 1  hours

PERMITS: None  (State of Wa Free Parks Day)

The Hamilton Mountain loop is challenging trail has it all: waterfalls, cliffs, deep forests and stunning views of the Gorge. The trail begins with a moderate climb, going through second-growth Douglas Firs, then under power lines. There are nice views of Hamilton Mountain and Bonneville Dam. 

After the getting back down we will head over to Beacon Rock and climb to the top, in the process we will crossing 17 bridges and traversing 54 switchbacks.  Once at the top, you will have a 360 degree view. To the north: Hamilton Mountain.  To the east: Bonneville Dam.  To the South: Munra Point, Elowah Falls.  To the West: Phoca Rock and Crown Vista Point.

Afterward if everyone is up to it we can head into Stevenson for a brew and bite at the Walking Man Brewery

Current forecast are for 30% chance of rain for Saturday.

What to bring:


• Sturdy hiking boots/shoes

• Two or three light layers of clothing that can be adjusted as necessary (NO COTTON or JEANS !!!)


• Rain gear

• Safety whistle, preferably on a cord around your neck (highly recommended)


• The 10 essentials*

• Trekking poles (never a bad idea)

• Lunch, snacks and plenty of water

CARPOOLING: RT mileage is around 90 miles, give or take; we suggest a mileage donation of 10 cents/mile/person, or $9.00. Exact change makes it easier to divide among our drivers. No one will be turned away for an inability to contribute. Thanks!
