PCT Trail Angel Opportunity

  • Updated 24Aug 11:35AM: The closure may have just been lifted, per a ranger at the Estacada Unit of the Mt Hood Forest Service. I will be out of town this weekend doing a PCT Trail Angel event north of Carson, WA ... I'll update this site again on Sunday night.

If you have ever thought about hiking all or part of the 2,650 mile Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada, but just couldn't make it work into your schedule ... I encourage you to join me for a DAY as a PCT Trail Angel.

Due to the Waterfall 2 fire, 24 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail is closed and PCT hikers are having to deal with a 38.6 mile detour, much of it road walking with little water.

This closure comes as the 'herd' of PCT Thru-Hikers is approaching this area. Many of these hikers will choose to stay true to the trail and walk the bypass, adding a day to their travel and going long stretches between reliable water sources. Some will hope to catch a ride with a PCT Trail Angel to avoid this dry, long bypass.

Charles and I are preparing to head out to this area with two vehicles to cache water, offer extra food, and shuttle those who want a ride to the next section of the PCT north of Ollalie Lake.

If you are interested in helping us with water, additional prepackaged backpacking meals, and/or shuttling hikers, please read on.

If you want to provide water and/or prepackaged food but cannot join us, please meet us at the Bridgeport REI parking lot between 6:30 and 7:00 to drop off your donation. We are leaving promptly at 7:00.

If you have a vehicle capable of handling rough fire roads and are able to shuttle hikers, please review the maps, read the route description, and feel free to ask me questions.

The hikers will be coming out of the wilderness at the South Breitenbush #3375 trailhead, located five miles up good gravel road 4685 off 46, 11 miles north of Detroit. They will need to be shuttled north of Olallie Lake on 4690 and then north to the junction of 4420 (rough road) and 4430. The shuttle drive is about an hour and a half drive each way.

Hiker's Detour Text: To detour, take Trail South Breitenbush Trail #3375* to South Breitenbush Recreation Trail #3366.  Take Road 4685 north to Road 46.  Take Road 46 north to Road 4690.  Take Road 4690 east to Road 4220.  Take Road 4220 north to 4230.  Follow signs and flagging to PCT. It is signed and flagged for 800 feet through a burn area and then it's flagged along an old road to the PCT crossing (total 0.8 miles). Take note of water issues along this detour. Halfmile's maps have water sources marked.

If you have PayPal I can send you $$. We are backpacking to Yocum Ridge this weekend and I plan to leave a stash of treats on the PCT for thru-hikers and retrieve it on the way back. (Yeah, I know they just hit the buffet @Timeberline.)

I have a project that requires me to be at work that day, but I'd be happy to help in any other way I can (food or gas donations?)
