The forecast for this weekend looks good and I want to squeeze in one last backpacking trip for the year before school starts back up and life as I know it comes to an end. I’ve been up to Indian Heaven a couple of times now, but always to the same spots and always on day hikes (plus one rained out backpacking trip), but this time around I want to be able to do some exploring without the time pressures of driving there and back on the same day. Here’s what I have in mind…
We’ll leave Portland mid-morning and head up to Indian Heaven. Starting from the Thomas Lake TH we’ll hike in the 3.4 miles to the junction with the PCT and look for a good campsite somewhere around there, which shouldn’t be too hard as we’ll be right in the neighborhood of Blue Lake, Lake Sahalie Tyee, and Tombstone Lake. Once we’ve found a spot we’ll set up base camp and enjoy the evening. Saturday is when the fun really begins! I will be bringing along a day pack and will see if I can’t find the bunny trails that lead to the tops of Gifford Peak and/or East Crater, and maybe scouting out some other stuff for future hikes (see Sullivan's 3rd edition, #s 31-33), but don’t feel like you have to do that if you don’t want to. Feel free to find a nice spot for a swim and some sunbathing, or if you’re feeling lazy to just chill out with a book at the campsite, or anything else that comes to mind. Saturday is YOUR day to enjoy as you see fit! Come Sunday morning, we’ll break down camp and make our leisurely way back to our cars and home (hopefully in time to catch the 2nd half of the night game).
I will bring along my stove and water filter to share, but depending on how many people show up we'll need at least one more filter and one more stove, so please note on your RSVP if you have one to bring. I also have a 2 person tent that I'm happy to loan to anyone who may need it. This is going to be a pretty mellow backpack, so this is suitable for a first timer. I'm not going to require that you attend the pre-hike meeting, which will be immediately following the monthly meeting on Thursday, but I will close RSVPs Thursday afternoon at 5:00pm. Also, please bring $13 for the drivers (who will need a NW Forest Pass). As far as the meeting place goes, I live in Sellwood and have plenty of safe street parking around my apartment, so let's meet here on Friday morning and figure out the carpool.
Sorry for the short notice!!!
NO DOGS, please.
