I just can’t seem to get enough of Indian Heaven- that place is fantastic! The huckleberrys are long gone, but the fall colors should still be out in full force, and who knows, we may even get to check out a mountain view or two. The plan is to start at Indian Heaven TH and take #33 past Cultus and Clear Lakes to the junction with the PCT. We’ll head towards Mexico for about a half mile to the turn off for Elk Lake #176, which we’ll follow for about 50 yards to an unmarked trail that descends to Acker Lake. From here we’ll follow the track (an abandoned trail, I think) south through some picturesque meadows for about 2 miles to Rock Lake and the junction with #111. We’ll follow #111 for about a mile or so and turn off at a “trail not maintained” sign just past Lake Umtux, which according to Sullivan will put us on an “easily followed path 1.7 miles through the meadows to Junction Lake”. Once at Junction Lake we’ll take #179 past Lemei Lake to Cultus Lake, then back out the way we came in to our cars and home (check out #s 31-33 in Sullivan’s 3rd edition).
The rating system puts this in the “challenging” range, but the two off trail portions and the pace that we’ll need to push in order to get back to our cars before sunset (~6:30 !!!), put this squarely in the category of “difficult”. Definitely bring a head lamp (you carry one anyway, right?), and long pants are a good idea. Also, since we’re looking at about an hour and a half of driving on each side of the hike (and hopefully a stop in Stevenson on the way back), please don’t RSVP for this hike if you have plans for the evening.
Please note that there is a MANUAL waiting list for this hike. What this means is that if a spot opens up everyone on the waiting list will automatically receive an e-mail notifying them of the opening. The first person (whether on the waiting list or not) to RSVP gets the spot.
NO DOGS, please.
