TOTAL MILES: ~14 miles
PACE: “Quick” (~2.5 mph)
PERMITS: NW Forest Pass
**RSVPs will open at 10:00pm Monday**
CARPOOLING: RT mileage is 150 miles, give or take; we suggest a mileage donation of 10 cents/mile/person, or $15.00. Exact change makes it easier to divide among our drivers. No one will be turned away for an inability to contribute. Thanks!

I just can’t seem to get enough of Indian Heaven- that place is fantastic! The huckleberrys are long gone, but the fall colors should still be out in full force, and who knows, we may even get to check out a mountain view or two. The plan is to start at Indian Heaven TH and take #33 past Cultus and Clear Lakes to the junction with the PCT. We’ll head towards Mexico for about a half mile to the turn off for Elk Lake #176, which we’ll follow for about 50 yards to an unmarked trail that descends to Acker Lake. From here we’ll follow the track (an abandoned trail, I think) south through some picturesque meadows for about 2 miles to Rock Lake and the junction with #111. We’ll follow #111 for about a mile or so and turn off at a “trail not maintained” sign just past Lake Umtux, which according to Sullivan will put us on an “easily followed path 1.7 miles through the meadows to Junction Lake”. Once at Junction Lake we’ll take #179 past Lemei Lake to Cultus Lake, then back out the way we came in to our cars and home (check out #s 31-33 in Sullivan’s 3rd edition).

The rating system puts this in the “challenging” range, but the two off trail portions and the pace that we’ll need to push in order to get back to our cars before sunset (~6:30 !!!), put this squarely in the category of “difficult”. Definitely bring a head lamp (you carry one anyway, right?), and long pants are a good idea. Also, since we’re looking at about an hour and a half of driving on each side of the hike (and hopefully a stop in Stevenson on the way back), please don’t RSVP for this hike if you have plans for the evening.

Please note that there is a MANUAL waiting list for this hike. What this means is that if a spot opens up everyone on the waiting list will automatically receive an e-mail notifying them of the opening. The first person (whether on the waiting list or not) to RSVP gets the spot.

NO DOGS, please.

What to bring:
• Sturdy hiking boots/shoes with at least one change of socks
• Two or three light layers of clothing that can be adjusted or removed as necessary (NO COTTON!!!)
• Rain gear
• Safety whistle, preferably on a cord around your neck (highly recommended)
• The 10 essentials*
• Trekking poles (never a bad idea)
• Lunch, snacks and plenty of water

*Navigation, Sun protection, Insulation, Illumination, First Aid, Fire, Repair Kit/Tools, Nutrition, Hydration, Emergency Shelter. For a more detailed description, check out “The Ten Essentials” on the Portland Hiking Meetup Group’s FILES page.

This may have been the best hike I went on in 2012 - I'd give it 6 stars if I could! Everything was perfect: the trail, weather, group, fall foliage, etc. Thanks so much to Zack for leading it.

Not a single cloud in the sky all day, the fall colors were almost overwhelming, and, most importantly, a great (!) group of hikers. I don't get to say this very often, but today was a perfect day!!!

These open spots are making it hard for me to not RSVP even if I'm the slow poke. Amazing place!
