Dry Creek Fall, to the Pinnacles. Beginners preferred!

I have some qualifications for this hike.

#1 your new to hiking and want to try a more gentle shorter hike.

#2 or you would like to do a nice hike on this day

Please don't sign up if your comfy with a 8+ mile hike.

During one of the monthly meeting it was asked if we ever do hikes for beginner's or just shorter hikes. Well, not often for me but I'm thinking we could do this one.

Distance is about 6 miles tops, I will confirm it later or we will just shorten the hike.

Elevation is about 800 feet, gain may be more with the ups and downs.

Difficulty I hope we all find it to be a easy hike but fun.

Pace will be moderate. 2 MPH OR LESS

Possible bonus hike at Wahcella Falls if anyone wants more! which is a fabulous hike btw!

Pay your driver $7 please, gas is outrageous at this time.

If anyone wants to join me afterwards at the Mall 205 for eats that would be great!

And I think we will be back by 4pm on this one, if you know me you would be laughing right now!

Please note that there is a MANUAL waiting list for this hike. What this means is that if a spot opens up everyone on the waiting list will automatically receive an e-mail notifying them of the opening. The first person (whether on the waiting list or not) to RSVP gets the spot.

DOGS, well behaved quiet ones I guess would be ok,

What to bring:
• Sturdy hiking boots/shoes with at least one change of socks
• Three to Five light layers of clothing that can be adjusted or removed as necessary (NO COTTON!!!)
• Rain gear
• Safety whistle, preferably on a cord around your neck (highly recommended)
• The 10 essentials*
• Trekking poles (never a bad idea)
• Lunch, snacks and plenty of water

*Navigation, Sun protection, Insulation, Illumination, First Aid, Fire, Repair Kit/Tools, Nutrition, Hydration, Emergency Shelter. For a more detailed description, check out “The Ten Essentials” on the Portland Hiking Meetup Group’s FILES page.

Boy, I didn't think it would be so icy down here but it was slick. Thanks everyone for joining me on a icy wintry day. It snowed to, how cool is that!

    January 5, 2013

    • Kathy

It was so darn cold in the parking lot! Glad we didn't head that way. We got snowed on all day long and the spikes were way better than snowshoes!!

      January 5, 2013

    • Sonhui

Indeed, it was very cool!! Thanks Rick for organizing and leading this beautiful hike!

Great job of leading the group Rick! The experience was a great advertisement for Microspikes. It was great to meet everyone. I look forward to the next hike.

I added a few spots and put on some of you more persistent hikers. Hope you all can figure out the system, I sidetracked it by becoming a leader.

Hi Rick, I got the notification There is room in "Dry Creek Fall" but do not see a spot, I am not doing it right?

      January 4, 2013

  • Sonhui

I haven't been to Gateway Transit center. When I click on the map link, the marker is placed on 9900 NE Broadway St. And a bunch of suggestion is displayed under 'Did you mean' on the left panel of Google Map. However, when I searched using the address, I think it got me to the right place near 84. Will it be fairly easy to find you there, Rick?

    January 4, 2013

  • Jamie

is there room for me, can't find how to add.

    January 3, 2013

  • Amber L.

There's a spot available and I don't know how to change my status from waiting list to going :( I know you mentioned an update button but I don't see one.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Zach! I stole the bottom portion from Zach at one time lol. Allison i can always use a good navigator.

    January 3, 2013

  • Allison A

My first hike with the group and I'm looking forward to it. Do I really need navigation tools for this hike? I'm good for all the other essentials.

    January 3, 2013

    • Zachary

An extra map and compass in the group never hurts, but you should be ok without it- Rick will take good care of you!!

      January 3, 2013

    • Allison A

Map is at hand; compass only on my phone, sad to say.

    Im going

  • Rick L. J.

The trail is at the Bridge of the Gods park. A nw pass is needed.

I'm pretty sure that the parking lot up towards the toll booth is closed for the season, but you can park under the B.O.G. (literally) at the far west end of the Char Burger parking lot and access the PCT from there.

Bobby , I think the best thang to do is' go to REI and pick up a map of forest park . You can start up by zoo' or Cornell road . Cheer Jeff'

Thanks for your reply and using "thang", reminds me of my hometown. I picked up the map last night. I have not had a moment to catch my breath since moving. So, I am NOT familiar with the area. That map is certainly helpful but I have some concerns regarding parking and what not.

      January 3, 2013

  • Rick L. J.

On the main page it says update. I think thats the one you use to change status.

    January 2, 2013

    • Kathy

Above the "## attending" there is a button. If there is an open space you click it and it will let you change your status to going. However, if you are not fast enough someone else grabs it and it won't let you add yourself. "# space left" has to be 1 or more in order to add yourself to the event. Look there first to see if you are wasting your time. It is says "no spots left" it means that someone else bet you to it. Good luck!

Thanks Kathy, I guess that Lyn hasn't signed off. So we are just switching places. I figured the "Change your mind" button was where to go and I couldn't figure out why it wasn't working. You explained it well. Thanks.

Hey! I'll take the open space on the hike. I would love to go. And rick I will take you up on the loan of your polls if you havn't loaned them to Joshia yet. lol!

    January 2, 2013

  • Rick L. J.

Joshia gas and time is the biggest cost. Once you have some gear. You can wear the clothes any time.

Hey Rick - checking on your No Cotton admonition. Am I to presume this means you want us to wear waterproof hiking pants as opposed to jeans? Thanks.

    January 2, 2013

    • Zachary

Not water-proof, but quick drying. "Cotton kills" because once it gets wet it stays wet, which is a recipe for hypothermia up here in the cold & wet PNW. So yes, leave those jeans and cotton tees at home!!

      January 2, 2013

  • Rick L. J.

I think the word is ascent and i have no problem with someone getting another hike together. 16 is a big crowd and more isnt as fun to lead or go on. Thom you can use my poles. I dont use them on short hikes.

There, I did it again. Also it was Joshua that was asking about poles. Drop a note to him below.

Again, thanks for your response. I am sitting up all night to see if anyone drops out (lol, not really). Enjoy the hike. With the size of the turn out, maybe more short (or beginner) hikes are in order. What does it take to lead one? Blessings, Thom

Whoa full already! Ok lets start the Year of with a nice hike. Hope we all have a nice time and the weather is at least passable for a nice outing. Its mostl a woodsy hike so dress a bit warmer.

Marci, I have a hard time believing that comment. Be good to see you again.

Then your last hike was Ruckel Ridge with me?

      January 1, 2013

    • Marci D.

No, I reached Pikers Peak on Adams in July...but injured my foot in August and have been sedentary since. Looking forward to hiking with you again :) I'm good for sweep!

  • Rick L. J.

No, I don't remember the lady, but you and your hat for sure and your spicy attitude for always.

    January 1, 2013

    • Kathy

Oh ya, I froze my buns off! It was SOOO cold and it wasn't even winter. Someone talked me into climbing to the top of the pinnacles and I am afraid of heights! It wasn't too much fun getting down either. That is when I went out and bought poles. Thanks for a "beginner" hike. It is so nice to see them posted. Too bad I am hosting a snowshoe on that day.

      January 1, 2013

  • Kathy

Hey, I ran into you for the first time on this hike. Remember the distraught lady that was devastated that we found her secret hike?
