Aquaponic Basics class and System Tour

Oval Gardens Aquaponics is holding a "Basics to Aquaponics" class January 18th from 9-10am at Pet N Pond in Clackamas. The class is free of charge and there will be a tour of the aquaponic system that Oval Gardens has installed there as well.

If you are just getting into aquaponics, start the New Year right by learning the basics! If you have been working with aquaponics for a while, you are still welcome to join the class or tour the system that Oval Gardens has installed at the Pet N Pond location. Participants will be given a 10% off coupon towards a custom designed aquaponic system.

In addition to RSVPing here on the Meetup group, please email [masked] to reserve your spot in the class.

Also, check out their website, ovalgardens.com. Valerie Premore and Scott Wright of Oval Gardens will be available afterwards for Q & A as well as to give a tour of the Oval Gardens Pet N Pond system.

I would like to say a few things about the spirit and goals of this Meetup. This is a forum for sharing information and experiences. This is a great group of people who are all deeply inspired by the promise of aquaponics, who want to make a difference in the world. It has always been a positive group with constructive comments and discourse. I am disheartened to see negative comments posted for a number of reasons. We should all be working together, to support and challenge each other. Valerie and Scott organized and presented a “basics” class, which they tailored to entry-level participants. It was not meant to delve into technical detail. In the future, if any member of this Meetup has questions or constructive criticism for a presenter or other member of the group, please first address those issues directly with the presenter and secondly with me, as the mediator of the group.

I am surprised to hear that a forum should not be used to discuss what a presenter said if you disagree. If information given in a presentation is incorrect how else would that correction be made? I realize that is a very fine line to walk sometimes if the criticism seems harsh.

Thank you for finally answering the question I have put out on a half dozen forums without any response about what happens to ammonia to create a low pH without getting any response. That was well worth the trip and thank you for being such a great technical resource.

I believe the presenters would do well to fact check any statements they make. They made a series of fact based statements that were either untrue, irrelevant or mis-characterized . They also, apparently have little or no experience gardening since they passed around a number of photographs of lettuce seed that had sprouted and grown very leggy and after five days still had not put out any true leaves to indicate the success of their project. To sum up, they failed answer any questions in a way that showed that they had any technical education at all while giving wild personal theories about how stuff works. Based on the information presented they seem to be aligned with the vegetarian industrial complex, a multi-billion dollar industry that depends on scaring people into buying things that they don't need and will never fulfill their needs or goals.

The water consumption is not what you may think. Water consumption of the plants needed to grow to feed cattle is included in the calculations. Take the quiz at http://ga.water.usgs.... you may be surprised at the results. Maybe the presenter should have referenced every fact but they took time out of their day to present a basic class. I agree that maybe they focused a little too much on generating interest in Aquaponics, I am assuming every one there was interested by the fact that they were there. I feel the presenters did a great job, they may need to tweak the presentation for their audience a little but I look forward to attending an advanced class. I left with more knowledge than I had when I arrived. Keep it constructive and thanks to Oval Garden Aquaponics for taking the time out of your weekend.

Tom, again in reference to your negative comments and attitude toward presentations, I state once more that I would be very happy to discuss facts and quantify my information at the next meetup. As stated by Anne and Bruce, we need to keep this positive. Due to our non use of technology for the presentation, the audience was not able to see the references we have. However, this information was with us and if you would have simply asked we would have gladly shown you. If you intend on claiming a group or company does not have valid resources or information then it would be in your best interest to research topics yourself. The fact that you claimed we have incorrect information and facts is slander, a defamation of character. Thank you, Scott Wright

Despite the strong criticism of the presenters that was voiced earlier here, I would love to report that there was a lot of great dialogue stimulated by the presentation at Pet 'n Pond in Clackamas this morning. Many people had key questions answered. The presentation was a great starting point with an orientation to the basics of aquaponics. After the formal presentation there were at least 6 side groups which gathered to carry on discussion of their interests and projects. What an interesting group of people with deep experience in a number of related disciplines. Plans are being made for a number of tours of tanks. Differences of opinion, experience and style are certainly welcome here. Thanks everyone for their contributions today. This was a very good meeting. And, thanks for the space Susanna!

I was happy to see so many people today at the Meetup who are interested in getting started with aquaponics. We will have different types of events this year to engage people with all levels of experience. These events will include tours of aquaponic systems, topic-focused seminars, and classes geared toward different levels of understanding of aquaponics as a growing method. I hope that the Meetup this morning was rewarding to everyone and that you were able to meet and connect with like-minded people who are attempting to forge a new path for sustainable agriculture. We are a community. I hope that we can have lively discourse and grow together as we learn. Thank you all for your enthusiasm and participation.

Looking forward to seeing you all at the workshop. Scott and I will also be available this Saturday, Dec. 28 at Pet N Pond from 2-4pm to answer any questions about aquaponic systems in general and the custom design systems our business builds. Stop by if you're in the area!
