January Book Club - The Winter Sea

The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley

Description:

It is 2008 and Carrie McClelland can't hit the right note for her next novel, but an unplanned detour in Scotland, and a stop at the castle that inspired Count Dracula, sets her on a different path; a path that took her back in time exactly 300 years, to that same castle, and to a rebellion doomed to failure. Alternating between the contemporary setting and the past, The Winter Sea takes us at every turn into little known worlds; historical footnotes writ large, a history of Scotland and the Jacobite rebellion of 1708 and the possibility of genetic memory. Historical fiction at its best and Susanna Kearsley at hers, The Winter Sea evokes the writing of Thomas Raddall, Daphne Du Maurier, and Mary Stewart.

Very well structured, with nicely done questions, for discussion. I look forward to another time!

I'm enjoying this book very much, but I haven't been able to read much of it! :(
I'm planning to come tonight, but am a bit concerned that hearing some things may ruin the rest of the read for me...thoughts?

I need to do something near the mall, so I may swing by. :)

I did go for about 20 minutes, then conversation got too detailed, so I opted out of staying; but it would have been a GREAT time, if I'd been more prepared, having read the entire book. Very well structured, and nicely done questions, for discussion. I look forward to another time!

If you have a Kindle the book is 0.99 today. I don't know how long the deal will last but it's good at least for today.

Alert! Awesome, I love free and under $5 books! Better yet, books that take up less space and create no clutter! :)

Has anyone read this yet? I've not read much this genre (although I do thoroughly enjoy Anita Shreve. Are the styles at all similar? I also have been trying really hard to NOT buy books, as I can be a bit of a book whore. If I can't get it at my local library, could I borrow one?

I haven't read it yet, nor do I have a copy yet. I'll most likely pick up the Kindle version, or see if the Kindle or audio book version is available through the library. If I buy it though, I can loan it to you via Kindle if you have one (and the publisher allows it to be loaned) once I've read it. :)

Hi. I have never done a book club before. How does it work? Obviously I need to read the book. Do we just discuss the book at the meeetup?

Hi Kaylana! We all read the book beforehand. Once we get there we usually all grab a bite to eat if we're hungry, then begin discussing the book. Either myself or one of the wonderful ladies filling in for me will have discussion questions that we go through. We also talk about or recommend other books/movies too before, during, or after the book discussion! :) I hope that answers your question.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
