This meetup is a chance to help build a new section of the Cape Horn Trail in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area!
We will be teaming up with the Washington Trails Association (WTA) which hosts regular work parties on trails across the state. WTA staff and volunteers will provide tools, instruction, a loaner hard hat and leadership. No previous experience required, just a willingness to have fun, meet new people and give back to the trail. Our work parties kick off at 8:30 am and end no later than 3:30 pm. Volunteers on this project will earn a NW Forest Day pass that you can use anytime in the future. Collect two passes from a WTA work party and earn your Annual Pass!
This project is part of a reroute to move the existing trail off of habitat for the Larch Mt. Salamander and to reduce the trail's steep grade. We will be working on the lower section past the west tunnel and just beyond the spectacular view points.
Required gear includes:
Sturdy work boots that provide ankle protection (leather preferred)
Work or gardening gloves
Sack lunch and water
Clothing appropriate for the weather
Backpack to carry your items
Always a good idea to bring:
Compass (optionally supplemented with a GPS receiver)
Sunglasses and sunscreen
Extra food and water
Headlamp (outdoor)/ flashlight - need for the early morning and evening
First aid kit - it is a smart item to carry.
Carpooling to Trail head: If you prefer to carpool with others, please feel free to use the comments section for this event to make arrangements.
CARPOOLING: Suggested mileage donation of 10 cents/mile/person. Exact change makes it easier to divide among our drivers. No one will be turned away for inability to contribute. Thanks!
Notice about the waiting list: The waiting list is manual for this hike which means that you won't be automatically placed on the trip when a spot opens up. In fact anyone can grab an open spot. To give those of you on the waiting list a better chance to grab a spot, as soon as I see the opening I will send an e-mail to all wait listed folks. The first person that responds by grabbing the spot gets on the trip. If you are not successful on finding a spot on this trip, I want to thank you for your interest and encourage you to check back for future hike. Remember that we are always look for new event leaders to that more people can have opportunities to participate. Let us know if you want to volunteer to lead an event!
WARNING: Vandalism is known to occur both at the parking areas for Forest Park and many of the Gorge Trails and at the Gateway Parking Garage. Do not leave valuables in your car!!!
