Let’s take a stroll through the woods without leaving the city! Or at least without leaving the suburbs. As an alternative to the usual Forest Park, come enjoy a hike on Mt. Talbert (A Metro run park - here is the web page link:http://www.oregonmetro.gov/index.cfm/go/by.web/id=22177) in North Clackamas County.
Mt. Talbert is one of several volcanic buttes in the Portland area (don’t worry – long since extinct) with a little over 4 miles of wooded trails surrounded on all sides by bustling civilization. You will be welcomed by plentiful ferns, moss covered fir and oak trees. Parts of the reserve are being restored as upland prairie and oak savannah – once a common site in the Willamette Valley.
If we are lucky we may encounter some of the wildlife that makes Mt. Talbert home, including deer, coyotes, raccoons and the usual small critters you’d find in the woods.
We will begin at the main trail head and circle the butte on a trail that includes some moderately steep climbs – enough to get the heart pumping but nothing too extreme. Shortly before completing the circle we’ll take a segment that climbs to the 750’ summit before winding back down to our starting point. Estimated distance is about 3 to 3.5 miles – I may update you on the exact distance later.
Be sure to bring shoes with good traction as parts of the trail may be muddy. Also, dogs are prohibited in the park so no dogs allowed nor any other type of pet. Leave pets at home. While the park is family friendly our Meetup events are adult only - so sorry, all participants must be over 18 for this event. There is a restroom at the trailhead.
Meet at the Trailhead at 10695 SE Mather Rd., at 9 am, south of Sunnyside Road in Clackamas, rain or shine unless the weather is too wet, or snow/ice. Click here for printable downloadable PDF MAP: http://library.oregonmetro.gov/filestalbert_map_web.pdf
