Mt Talbert: Let’s take a stroll through the woods without leaving the city!

Let’s take a stroll through the woods without leaving the city! Or at least without leaving the suburbs. As an alternative to the usual Forest Park, come enjoy a hike on Mt. Talbert (A Metro run park - here is the web page link:http://www.oregonmetro.gov/index.cfm/go/by.web/id=22177) in North Clackamas County.

Mt. Talbert is one of several volcanic buttes in the Portland area (don’t worry – long since extinct) with a little over 4 miles of wooded trails surrounded on all sides by bustling civilization. You will be welcomed by plentiful ferns, moss covered fir and oak trees. Parts of the reserve are being restored as upland prairie and oak savannah – once a common site in the Willamette Valley.

If we are lucky we may encounter some of the wildlife that makes Mt. Talbert home, including deer, coyotes, raccoons and the usual small critters you’d find in the woods.

We will begin at the main trail head and circle the butte on a trail that includes some moderately steep climbs – enough to get the heart pumping but nothing too extreme. Shortly before completing the circle we’ll take a segment that climbs to the 750’ summit before winding back down to our starting point. Estimated distance is about 3 to 3.5 miles – I may update you on the exact distance later.

Be sure to bring shoes with good traction as parts of the trail may be muddy. Also, dogs are prohibited in the park so no dogs allowed nor any other type of pet. Leave pets at home. While the park is family friendly our Meetup events are adult only - so sorry, all participants must be over 18 for this event. There is a restroom at the trailhead.

Meet at the Trailhead at 10695 SE Mather Rd., at 9 am, south of Sunnyside Road in Clackamas, rain or shine unless the weather is too wet, or snow/ice. Click here for printable downloadable PDF MAP: http://library.oregonmetro.gov/filestalbert_map_web.pdf

WARNING: Vandalism is known to occur. Do not leave valuables in your car!!!

Notice about the waiting list: The waiting list is manual for this event which means that you won't be automatically placed on the trip when a spot opens up.  In fact anyone can grab an open spot.   To give those of you on the waiting list a better chance to grab a spot, as soon as I see the opening I will send an e-mail to all wait listed folks.  The first person that responds by grabbing the spot gets on the trip.  If you are not successful on finding a spot on this trip, I want to thank you for your interest and encourage you to check back for future events.  Remember that we are always looking for new event leaders so that more people can have opportunities to participate.  Let us know if you want to volunteer to lead an event!

NO GUESTS PLEASE! only group member are allowed to RSVP so if you want someone to come please have them join our meetup group and RSVP for this event under their own name.

Everyone must agree to the Groups Liability Agreement/Waiver. Your profile must show that you have read and agreed and you will sign a paper copy at the start of the event. If you need to fix your profile - there are step-by-step instructions on the Discussion board for this group - second message from the top or click this linkPeople who sign up without the necessary agreement in their profile will be removed from the trip.

Departure date/time: 9 am, Sunday December 16. For those interested, we can have an early lunch at Gustav's after the hike.

For those who want to meet up at the Tualatin Park and Ride, then carpool to the trailhead: I'll plan on getting there at 8:10 - we'll want to leave no later than 8:20. I'll be in a burgundy Jeep Grand Cherokee somewhere near the entrance (should be easy to find). Anyone who is planning on meeting there - feel free to reply to this post so we can be sure to connect.

Indeed! I'm up for this idea!

      December 10, 2012

    • Joanne

Folks - if you are organizing your own side trip at a different time, ie 1pm, that's fine but it's not set up as a meetup with this group. Please make sure to change your RSVP to the event that is on this page which starts at 9 am if this is your plan so other people on the wait list can go with Tim at 9 am. It's a big park and it's probably open until dusk.

The best way to get events to happen on days and times you prefer is to volunteer to lead them!

I already am pretty much recovered. Stopped the pain meds over 24 hours ago. Still have one more medical procedure before the end of the year and not released to exercise fully yet.

Good morning Prentice. At this point the hike is full - but that may change. Be sure to keep an eye on the RSVP list and move yourself to "going" if something opens up or if I end up opening the group to more people. Once we get closer to the date we'll coordinate the meeting time for those wanting to carpool from the Tualatin Park and Ride. Thanks!

Hi Prentice. As a first step go ahead and add yourself to the wait list. There should be a RSVP button in the upper right hand portion of the webpage. Then watch the list and if someone changes their RSVP to not going, be sure to move yourself from the wait list to the "going" list.

It's possible I may open this up to more people - if I do you can add yourself at that time as well. Probably won't make that decision until sometime during the week before the event.

Is Mt. Talbert and Mt Tabor the same?

    December 3, 2012

    • Joanne

nope differant places but related since they are part of the same series of extintc volcano buttes that dott the east side - along with powell butte, rocky butte and mt scott.

The leader sets the limit of people that they are comfortable working with. We have over 3,000 people and only a few brave souls have offered to lead. Sadly people that signed up often don't show up. It is up to Tim if he wants to increase the number of people on the trip. This is his first ever time leading so we need to respect his wishes. (Tim you can edit and increase the number allowed if you want - but 100% up to you.) Also wilderness regulations on some trails limit the trips to 10 or fewer hiking together to protect the animals, prevent erosion and to make it a more wilderness like experience. If all 20 people show up that's a lot of people to keep together and it starts to feel like a hiking freeway rather than a nice peaceful venture into nature. The solution is to have more trip leaders leading more small separate groups. I am having surgery this week and will be laid up for a few weeks. So no time to organize more here but folks consider offering to host!

Thanks for the information Joanne. makes sense to me..

      December 3, 2012

    • Joanne

:) Hang in there - Tim is aware of the problem and may open up some spots as the hike date gets closer. Also check daily - if someone drops off you can grab the opening - the wait list does not move you onto the trip - it is more of a notice device to the trip leader - so vigilance will be rewarded - especially if it's cold and rainey I predict an exodus if you are a hardy soul you can jump in.

I live in Milwaukie if any one would like to ride with me. I can hook up with you at Clackamas Town Center if you would like

    December 3, 2012

FYI if you are wait listed don't show up without express permission from the trip leader.

Hi there. As i am new to meetup groups can someone tell me why there is a limit on the amount of hikers on a trip such as this? Just curious. Thought my RSVP got me in but I see i am just on the waiting list? Thanks

If anyone who is going wants to carpool from the Tualatin Park and ride (near the I5/I205 interchange) I am happy to meet up there. We're still a ways away, so reply if interested and we can shore up the details as it gets closer.

I live in johns landing and would like to carpool too...I can drive but I dont know the area well enough to know a central spot and I am on the wait list.

    December 3, 2012

  • Joanne

Remember our RSVP policy - you sign up you show up or risk getting booted from our group. Changing your RSVP less then 24 hours before the event is not enough time for others to take your spot. Firm up your RSVP at least 5 days prior to the event.

    December 3, 2012

  • Joanne

Folks - I just want to remind you all that this trip is 2 weeks in the future - we don't know what the weather will be - so if you signed up you need to be committed to going, rain or shine. If you change your mind change your RSVP so someone else can have your spot. Flakiness is not a good thing when you are holding a spot that someone else wanted.

    December 3, 2012

  • Brad

I would like to catch a ride also. Maybe from Clackamas Town center MAX?- what area works for you Prentice?
