I looked up Jordan Creek and it looks like it's higher elevation than Browns Camp. The "Ridersplanet" description of it says 'This trail system offers some narrow, steep and technical trails with sharp cutbacks. Most of the terrain is fairly difficult, with some parts so steep, they are basically one way (down!)." Given that it's likely to be icy and Jordan Creek is much farther down hwy 6 up into the mountains, I'm going to stick with Brown's Camp. The toyhauler has a heater so at least I can warm up after!

I'm sorry, peeps. I just went out to start my bike. It's so freaking cold out right now - and the sun is shining - that I don't even WANT to start it, much less load it up. I think I'm going to wait until spring to meet you all. Perhaps Nathan or someone would be kind enough to host another tune-up clinic just before spring riding season??? :)

I received a call from the Tillamook State Forest OHV Specialist this morning. He said the upper elevations are ICY and snowy. This includes Browns Camp. He was out there yesterday and said the ground is dry but it was slick. If you're on a quad you'd be ok but two wheels... it's icy. He said we'd be better off riding Jordan Creek. I'd have to look up how to get there because I forgot. I'll try to get to it...

Directions to Jordan Creek, taken from http://www.riderplane...

      1) 26 west to 6 west
      2) Continue on Hwy 6 West to milepost 18
      3) Turn left at mile post 18 onto Jordan Creek Rd.
      4) Follow road two miles to staging area entrance on the right (go straight through the intersection after the bridge. If you reach a second bridge, you've gone too far.)

I have not been to browns camp before. What kind or tags and permits do I need?

    January 18, 2013

    • Gaylene G.

Your bike needs an OHV license/permit sticker.

      January 18, 2013

    • Nathan F.

Gaylene's right. They do check for OHV stickers and I've seen people fined. It's around $250 for the fine but considered a "fix it ticket". Meaning, if you buy the OHV sticker afterwards and send in proof with your ticket the fine is reduced to somewhere around $10-20.

If you're from Washington, you need either an Oregon OHV sticker or Washington OHV tags (they count in Oregon). Washington licence plates don't count like they do on trails in our state, for you dual sport guys and gals.

I have extra Tillamook maps. We are meeting at the staging area, correct? the map link put me in Beaverton. my phone[masked]
bikes are plugged in and so are my heated gloves! Snowboarding Sunday anyone?

    1 · January 18, 2013

    • Gaylene G.

I have other plans for Sunday, but here's today's report from Meadows: "Good morning! Sunshine continues on Mt. Hood today - it's clear as a bell this morning! And unlike other days this week, the wind is calm as a mountain lake in a lush valley. Groom came out hard as a rock overnight, but don't worry. That's just because it's dark as a thief's pocket up here now. When the sun pushes over the eastern horizon, and the temps climb, the snow will be soft as a slushy Slurpee. With sun on the slopes, light wind, and 50°, this place will be as fun as a barrel of monkeys."

Wish I was in town this weekend! Dirt biking Saturday and Skiing Sunday sounds fun! Another time.

Just so no one else gets caught off guard like I did when the Shell station and the Glenwood store were out of permits... If you need one, the forestry center had them, but I'd check by phone first...

I also challenged the exam and got the safety certificate dealy-thing you're supposed to have when you ride now.

    • Dan

Do they have permits at the staging area or do you have to pay in advance somewhere? I haven't been here before.

      January 18, 2013

    • Gaylene G.

No, there is nothing at the staging area other than a vault toilet.

I plan to meet at the staging area. I haven't been to Browns camp. Can anyone comment on the road conditions (pot holes and ruts). My tow rig is a Nissan 350Z.

    January 17, 2013

    • Gaylene G.

The gravel road going up the hill to the left into the staging area looked pretty freshly groomed last time I went. When was that, a couple months ago, guys? There were some good sized holes and ruts in the parking area, but if I remember correctly, you should be able to get around them.

Looks like Saturday's forecast is Partly Cloudy with a high of 55° and a low of 39°. I made a call tonight to riderplanet-usa for an update on trail conditions. Don't know if/when I'll hear back. I USED to have a Tillamook State Forest trail map, but can't find it at the moment. I've ridden Browns Camp a few times but still don't know my way around all that well. If anyone sees maps up for grabs, maybe grab a few and pass them out? I'll be pulling my bike out tomorrow and making sure it's running. So far I still plan on going. I will meet at the staging area as well. I drive a red Ranger 4x4 with a canopy and haul my bike on a receiver hitch rack. My phone # (503)[masked]
