Update 12/14/12 8 AM:
The storm we've been waiting for is finally here. We might very well get 50" in the next five days, much of it quite cold. If the storm is as strong as it appears we will no longer have early season conditions by next weekend. Unfortunately little of the fresh will fall today and tonight so we won't benefit much tomorrow but pretty much every day after Saturday should have at least 6" of nice snow.
The ride situation sorted itself out- thanks Matt and Tom- so everybody who signed up gets to go.
End of update
The 8th turned out to be a nice day. 15” of fresh 22 degree snow within two days or so of the event on top of a very solid base. Still need more snow but what we has covered better then I would have thought. Meeting up by the flagpole in the morning didn't really work very well since a bunch of us had to get passes. We'll do better on the 15th. Two drivers stood us up at Gateway but I had a couple of extras so we all got seats with one to spare.
Too early to predict the weather with any kind of accuracy for the 15th when this is posted on the 9th but as of now it looks as if the freezing levels will drop back down on Tuesday and stay down until at least Saturday with some but not a huge amount of precipitation.
There were an impressive amount of comments last week. I'd like to discuss two areas of comments briefly. First, please do not arrange carpooling in the comment sections. I'll make sure everybody has a seat at Gateway. Second, from a practical perspective the event is only open to members who ride with the group from Gateway. If you'd like to meet up with us on Hood feel free to try to catch us by the flag pole shortly before 9 AM but not by posting in the comment section and certainly not by signing up for the event with no intention of riding up with us.
Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to meet most of the new members other then briefly but I got a good hit of the entire group. I hope to see you back soon as well as new and old faces from last season who didn't make it yesterday.
Below is an description of the event and a disclaimer. Please read once. It will not change much from week to week. The description last edited 11.21.12
Number of members who can attend: We are limited by the number of drivers. As more drivers sign up more seats will be made available. The people on the waiting list will automatically be moved up.
Meeting place: We meet in the SE corner of the parking structure at the Gateway Transit Center. I drive a Maroon BMW and am easy to spot. For some reason a number of people have had a hard time finding us so please make sure you are in the right place. If you are concerned about finding us feel free to email me earlier in the week and I'll send you my phone number so that you can call the day of the event if need be.
Riding up: There is no need to arrange rides prior to arriving at Gateway. We'll always drive the fewest possible number of cars to the mountain and will divide up at Gateway. No one will be left behind. Be on time, though. We don't wait for stragglers.
Gas money: Each rider pays $15 to the driver for each trip. Please have cash ready and offer to the driver without him/her having to ask.
On the mountain: Most of us prefer to ski/board with others. Once at Meadows we meet up by the outside ticket booth and group up according to skill level. You can of course take off on you own if you prefer.
Helmets save lives. Please wear one.
Disclaimer: While this is a regular Meetup event it is not “led” in the same way we might be used to having Meetup events led. I'll see you long enough to get you in a car at Gateway and possibly again at Meadows long enough to get you hooked up with a group but unless you are skiing with me we will have limited contact. Each person needs to self manage, come prepared for the weather conditions and ski/board according to his/hers ability.
